And would you consider it a good or a bad thing?

I find myself being called 'eccentric' quite a bit; by strangers, clients and by family members alike. I consider it a good thing. I don't conform to most standards and display higher intelligence which manifests in creative activities and I very much dislike small talk. I enjoy deep meaningful conversation (probably one of the reasons I don't speak much with my own family, I dislike the dullness of genetic small talk) and find myself socially awkward. I never need reassurance from the rest of society, nor their acceptance when it comes to how I speak or present myself. I have a large number of 'odd' or 'pointless' hobbies.

Does anyone else display similar traits? Would you consider yourself 'different' or 'eccentric' by modern standards set by our societies?

Oh, so you are a high-functioning sociopath.

Eccentricity and Sociopathic behaviours are very different.

Sociopaths lack a sense of shame, they have a very weak conscience and tend to be manipulative. I fortunately do not share any of those traits. Although I admit that i've been called a sociopath more than once.

You can only be considered 'eccentric' if you're rich. If you're poor you're just a weirdo.

What if I make a decent income~?

I kind of sympathise with you [OP] because I also feel like I'm eccentric around others, albeit I do enjoy small talk. I definitely have a way of doing things that are seemingly different from the norm. For example, I naturally like to use so-called "big words" when talking with people, but I make sure that I fully understand the word first or else I risk being perceived as pretentious.

Plenty of people consider me weird, even my own family and friends. I tinker with everything, I game on Mint (linux gaming probably requires a level of insanity to begin with), I favor my 3DS over getting a smartphone, and I don't really consider anything too personal to talk about. I actually enjoy embarrassing my friends in public by talking about things most would consider taboo. It's all in good humor. :grog:

I think my joke was so bad and that it just got lost in there, but meh. That's life.

I also don't see being eccentric as a bad thing. I put a quote in my profile status that I found to be greatly inspiring.

"Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine." - The Imitation Game, 2014

I take this as it doesn't hurt to be different; besides, it is the driving force of people who strive to do great things.

You seem to be confused about the meaning of sociopathy.
I would argue that being deemed a sociopath has a more negative connotation that being eccentric could ever be.

Quite frankly I'd describe myself as nuttier than a Nutter Butter nutter's buttery nuts. But given what passes for normal around here (the accepted social standard here in Coventry involves bat wings and a vestigial tail, dragging your knuckles along the floor and grunting at referees) I'll settle for being wierd, thanks.

I wouldn't exactly describe myself as eccentric, but I do certainly enjoy my time talking to people, especially on here. I specifically signed up to this very site because I feel we are all like-minded; we all like to hack, we all like to game, we have the same interests etc. etc.

Trust me, I only turn into a complete psycho if I manage to hack and pirate on a console I've never hacked or pirated on before.

To paraphrase Temple Grandin, 'cure autism and nobody will ever invent anything again' ;)

I completely agree :) Sociopathy is a personality disorder, whereas eccentricity is a usually harmless quirk ;)
