Hey guys quick thread here.
So I got a 360 that is from 2007 with HDMI (Zephyr I think) from a lot on goodwill.
When it finally got to me I turned it on and it threw an E74 error (P4 light was red). Upon looking online I found that it's either a HANA chip issue or an issue with the GPU "Flip Chip". So since I have no soldering equipment to try and fix such an issue, I did the next best thing. Hit it with a hairdryer for 4 minutes and apparently, this did somthing. when It cooled down and I put the heatsink back on to test it was now giving me an overheating error (two red lights). Which made sense initially because it was just subject to extreme heat but now as it was room temperature it didn't make any sense. The only thing I can think of that could be it was that when I took the heatsink off it broke the seal with the thermal paste and now it just heats up to overheating instantly. I got paste coming in the mail today to test this theory but other than that I have no idea what could be the issue now. Honestly. Don't have too high of hopes for this console but I thought I would throw everything at it before giving up.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great. Thanks

Only real solution is to reball it.

You could try and put some washers and bolts on the heatsinks instead of the Xclamps but I recommend against it.

you'd need to send it to someone with a bga station to reball it properly. that could cost around $80, so not worth it, no.

Alright, that's what I thought, Now I have a question, I have a 360 from 2009 in the same lot with a borked DVD drive. I Will only read certain disks and just overall is hit or miss. The one from this console seems to work fine. Is it possible to plug these into a desktop computer and remarry them?

I think you replace or even spoof the drive if it's a different make or model, but that's something I haven't done. my knowledge of it is limited. I'm sure spoofing might be detectable, but I'm not sure.

you can try to remarry, yes, but it sounds like the dvd drive is trash.

Yea they are two different types Phillps/Lite-on is the failing drive and A Hitachi is a working drive. I would just try and clone the cd key so that it can play games. its no use having a all-digital edition Xbox 360

I think jungleflasher has a spoofing option, but it's been years (like 12 maybe).

I think the model of drive is in the kv, so if it's different (not spoofed), I don't think it will function.

And spoofing can be detected if one were to go online?

I"m not sure. I've heard yes, but I don't know for 100% certainty. I've only flashed 2 drives, so I don't have all that much experience there.

I do have one question though, How is it possible that E74 was the original issue but now after I heated it up it is listing as overheating issue. It doesn't make sense in my head. Is there an explanation for this?

Interesting, not much of a solder guy so the more you Joe I guess... I didn't think that a hairdryer could heat up solder that much. I mean hell. the GPU and HANA chip didn't move at all. I may keep it around to try BGA soldering one day all depending on if i can get its optical drive to work in another system. Would you happen to know anything about that?

E74 is the same as general hardware failure iirc (rrod). it doesn't take much to overheat the 360. you unplug the fan, and less than two minutes, it will overheat. the older 360s are very badly designed, even heard the lead engineer was fired over it.

I mean he probably deserved it too. This is a model with a "Revised Heatsink" I just hope I can break even on this lot. Even if its 1 working slim, one working without a Disk Drive and one broken one.
