I recently tore down, heat gun'd, and rebuilt my first-gen (CECHA) PS3 which was dead due to a YLOD. A couple weeks later, the YLOD came back, it is no longer booting.

I'm currently scoping out options for repairing it. My question to the community is--

Is there anyone trustworthy out there that could both repair the error (and do it right) and downgrade it? (It's a NAND model.)

Thanks.

From what I've been reading it will just die again no matter what... I've been researching it as I received one that was turning on, then turning off again straight away. Hopefully someone on this forum can help us? I really want to play Shadow of The Colossus!

I have heard that reballing is the only true fix for these issues, with additional cooling to prevent the issue from happening again.
AKA. Buy another PS3

Well it's CECHA, the worst one, but there is a ps2 board in there :-)
Second or third slim revision are best if you as me. Adding a fan.with a cover is ease, just a bit of DIY.
If you want, try reballing, I think that ps3 deservers it :-)

ylod sucks ass man!
I've had my FAT ps3 for like nearly 6 years now.

I've had its HDD swapped, there is a 320gig in it.
and i use a external hdd with it.
and I've once had YLOD with it.

for like a couple of times , but miraculously it went away by itself.

and i definitely noticed that it's way more apparent when i was running a heavy game in it such as a game that's over 20-30gigs in size such as a FF game and so on.

but since i mostly play only jrpgs on my ps3 that ylod (overheating issue is gone).

at times i still see the yellow light though when i leave my ps3 on for 2-3 hours.

i rarely play more than 2 hours straight a day on my ps3.
i give it plenty rest.

Reballing is literally the only real solution.

I still need to delid the CPU of me PS3 and replace the thermal grease between the CPU die and IHS tho ;')

Blame the EU n their stupid regulations about banning lead in solder.
Fucking people aren't going to lick it...

Leadfree solder is horrible, it isn't as soft as 60/40 solder and cracks far to easy.

Not to defend an inferior product, but I think leadfree was put in place to reduce the carbon footprint, and also to try to reduce the heath issues associated with working in those kind of factories.
Unfortunately it does cause issues like this, but I think it more comes down to the console manufacturers being cheap and skimping out on cooling efficiency

It's planned obsolescence.
This wasn't an issue 20 years ago.

I'm not entirely sure but they banned leaded solder for peoples health or childrens health or something.
I mean, I'm pretty sure everybody opens up their expensive equipment and start specifically licking the leaded solderjoints.

Hunny!? what's for dinner?
Lead darling!

This isn't the 50's anymore where people actually drank radioactive water ;p

There's a guy called PS3 Specialist who does professional reballing of PS3 and other consoles. I think the service runs about 50 USD and I'm not sure if he does international orders but you pay the shipping so I don't see why not.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:

still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm

i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space

@rqkaiju2, Physical media is a great source for archiving your data, none of that cloud storage shiz.
