I'm surprised no one has made one of these yet. Is anyone else excited for this game? I definitely am, since it's a sequel to my favorite side scrolling platformer, ever. What do you guys think of it? Is anyone preordering it?

I was immediately de-hyped when I learned at it is being developed by Arzest.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arzest
Arzest is comprised of key members from Artoon, the developers responsible for the massively disappointing Yoshi's Island DS.
I will give them the benefit of the doubt though and wait to see how well the game is received on release, but I am in no hurry to grab this game.

When the game was announced I was pretty hyped,
but after seeing the trailer I'm having dubious thoughts.
The artstyle is much different from the original and DS one, and I'm not liking it.
The graphics seems a bit ugly and unpolished, maybe it will get better within the development.

I'll wait the release to see if the game is any good, and if it convinces me, I'll buy it.

It was formed on June 25, 2010 by key members of Artoon, which was also founded by Arzest Executive Vice President Naoto Ohshima, best known as the character designer of Sonic the Hedgehog himself, as well as his main enemy Dr. Eggman. Arzest was also founded by key Artoon and Sega members who worked on the Panzer Dragoon series.
...they were recruited by Nintendo to work on some mini-games in Wii Play: Motion for the Wii.
Just recently they worked on additional new features of one of the 3DS' main built-in software applications StreetPass Mii Plaza, such as adding SpotPass features to Puzzle Swap among others.

Doesn't sound like they will mess it up as bad as the ds version, with all that talent and all, but we will wait and see

I didn't know they were developing it. I'm actually playing Yoshi's Island DS for the first time right now, and eh... I don't know, the game definitely has a lot of cool innovation and new stuff (which is more than can be said of most 2D revival Nintendo games as of late), but it feels overly complex. That said, I'd rather have an overcomplicated platformer that adds new stuff, rather than a "play it safe" rehash like the NSMB games have been. So we'll see.

Personally, I love the art style. It reminds me of a blend between Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, which I think is great.

That said, the trailer has me a bit wary, too. I notice that the trailer shows only shows one minor new innovation, and that is those giant egg coin one up bonuses. Literally everything else is the exact same as it was in the original Yoshi's Story. That combined with the fact that every game Nintendo puts the word "New" in the title seems to be a complete rehash has me a bit worried. :\

Either way, if the platforming is as solid as the first one, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I'll just be a bit disappointed if we don't see anything new.

the one bad thing about yoshis island ds was that it relied on both screens so much. at least in the early levels, it felt like you constantly had to shoot something on the top screen. but that just never worked well.
yoshis island is among the games i'd rather have on a single screen with just a dumb map or points screen at the bottom.

Still better than the GBA port of the original Yoshi's Island.

that port was great, what's your problem with it?

I actually don't like the artstyle of Yoshi's Story, for me they should stick with 2D sprites in this new game.

I like the New Super Mario Bros series, although, at least for me, they aren't on the same level as the previous Mario 2D platform titles.
The problem, in my opinion, is that Mario 2D platforms became kind of bland and unnoriginal with NSMB series,
there isn't anything that makes them unique or involving, the recent titles are more of the same.
It looks like Nintendo uses their good ideas and originality on 3D Marios and gives less attention to NSMB series.
I'm afraid that the same may happen to Yoshi New Island.

Why does everyone hate on the GBA port? It's the exact same freaking game, with new soundbytes and minor graphical changes, along with extra bonus levels. Of course it has lower sound quality and resolution, but that's an inherent limitation of the GBA itself. The fact that they were able to decently port the game like that (the SNES original required a special chip, I think) is just incredible.

I prefer sprites myself (high resolution sprites with a 3D effect like in Mighty Switch Force would be amazing). But alas, Nintendo seems to consider sprites a thing of the past (aside from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which looks like it uses stylized sprites for the character models). :\

And I agree 100% with you about NSMB.

Is it just me or the game artstyle is similar to Van Gogh art.
Those curvy paint stoke brushes on the game look a lot like the starry night ones.

It's not the first time they get inspired on Van Gogh.

Anyway, xwatchmanx
I think you should put this video on the OP, it would be good for the topic.

I'd also like to share this, it's also a footage of the E3 demo of the game:

Huh... Interesting observation. I never thought of it before.

Anyway, thanks. I'll add the video to the OP.

I wonder, why people complain so much about the DS version?
That game was fantastic, on par with the original.

What's so wrong with that game?

Personally I think it's alright, just over complicated with all the different babies and stuff. Plus I hate how they added a run button (which can only be utilized by one of the babies, really?), and I don't think the music is as good. That said, I haven't finished the game yet, so I'll reserve my final thoughts until I'm done. I really do appreciate how they innovated new things while still being true to the original, though.

I understand you, but most of people I know talk like it's utter shit.
Not sure if I'm failing to see it's defects or if people are blinded by nostalgia

Maybe a combination of both. I don't think it's as good as the original, but at the same time, I think it's still a decent game overall.

I've never played it personally, I was trying to convey the fact that just because it was from the same company doesn't mean that it will be as bad as he is probably expecting.

The DS one just had a general feeling of cheapness, like you're playing through a poor homebrew game where the developer clearly cut corners.
It's a solid game, but it is missing the famous polish and "Nintendo Magic" that 95% of Nintendo games have.

The graphics were cheap, and didn't capture the original game's art style, if anything they must have tried to modernise the "drawn in crayon" style to a "drawn in Paint" style. To add to that, the music also sounded cheap. The actual compositions were charming, but it didn't translate well into the DS's soundboard.

New Island seems to look better, though. The new graphics actually look pretty great (my opinion), and reminds me of the intro sequence in the SNES original, and the level design looks very nice, or at least what we've seen so far. I can say that I do have it pre-ordered and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. (Not to mention it will probably be the last game on my list of 3DS games to get).
