I wonder if ZE3 would make sense for people who only played 999, as it is some kind of pre-sequel.
While being announced officially as being in development makes it actually being made more reliable, I was kind of hoping for Kickstarter so I could get some cool merch.Hey, I found the right thread! ..finally.
I honestly waited for it to come to Kickstarter. But this is great, too!
Considering ZE3 will be the end of a trilogy, I imagine the story will be that much more tied to the previous installments. I could see how VLR would be playable (but not a complete experience) if someone played it without playing 999, but I doubt that'll be the case again.I wonder if ZE3 would make sense for people who only played 999, as it is some kind of pre-sequel.

Though if I think about it, they shouldn't be able to retcon that much in ZE3 from VLR, asit actually plays between 999 and VLR and there should also only be two characters ingame, who know about what happened in VLR.
There's more than two people. While it's assumed that Junpei and Akane can't jump like the others, they can communicate with each other through the morphogenetic field, so it may be possible that their VLR selves talk to the ZE3 ones. Even if that weren't possible, that'd still leave Sigma, Phi, ?, and Brother. Brother's most likely the main antagonist in ZE3 and according to a teaser by Uchikoshi, it's possible his body has slipped through time. That would either mean he has the ability to jump or there's some unknown person/force/machine that can make him. Of course, there's always the possibility that previously unknown characters have the ability to jump and/or that characters we already know have the ability but were either lying, didn't know, or somehow gained it. If it happened to Brother, who's to say it can't happen to someone else? That would leave a minimum of 4 characters who know about the events of VLR.
A cliffhanger that would have made it ridiculously depressing if the third game hadn't been made.
This is so awesome. Zero Escape is one of my favorite video game series.
For those of you who haven't yet, you MUST play 999 (the first game in the series), it's the best IMO.
You can't really blame a game for being the second in a trilogy. With VLR as story-centric as it is, naturally it's going to be inconclusive. If a story ends with all loose ends tied up and no allusions to future events, it doesn't need a sequel. Considering how much I love VLR, I'm glad it ended the way it did, because it meant I would be able to spend more time with the story, even if it does take us 4 years to get there. In my opinion, the general gameplay, and graphic aspect in VLR were quite better than 999, but the plot left so many things untied and unsaid, that the game doesn't feel complete by itself, unlike 999. You could play 999 alone and be satisfied by the plot and puzzles, but with VLR the plot hyped me up, but at the end it was "WHERE'S THE CONCLUSION " .
I also prefer 999 for that btw.
It's funny, Japan makes a bunch of psychological thrillers and horror novels, like Chaos;Head, Saya no Uta, and the like, and they're known to be better received in the west, but a lot of the time they never make official translations (or they do but after a fan translation has already released and most of the people interested have already read it). I guess that's what happens when companies don't wanna take risks by localizing their work within a reasonable time frame.Yeah, for anybody wondering, you can't just get away with playing 999, or just playing VLR. 999 is the foundation for ideas in VLR that would make VLR kind of confusing without, and VLR is the absolutely necessary foundation for ZE3. No one piece will make the third make complete sense. The Zero Escape series is a great set of visual novels with themes that apparently only greatly appeal in the West, but that's all the more reason everybody should check them out.

I know, that's why I said she could wait for the release of ZE3 to play it , that cliffhanger left me a bad last impression of the game when the overall quality was really good. Especially with no sequel in sight at that time.

Spoiler maybe?WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
There's only one thing I wish for now:
I meant
@osm70 remember thatthe player has always been part of the story.
on 999 Jumpei even mention that he know things he shouldn't because something or "someone" is giving him that knowledge.
on VLR is implicit but a clear example is when Sigma in one timeline betrays Alice because he knew Alice had betrayed him in the other timeline, he says something like "but she was going to chose betray, she did before." while Phi wonders what was he talking about when she should know too.
I could be wrong butI meantthat guy in Kyle's body.
you may be correct in both cases. after all has been ages since I played 999 and VLR. but I'm still not convinced about your theory of 999.About what you said:
VLR - He knew, because he saw it in another timeline. Phi did not make the same jumps as he did, so she was not in the timeline he meant.
999 - That was Akane in the past. She saw all possible timelines and sent Junpei information from one of them to another one. (Coffin code in real ending.)
