A critcism of GBATemp

Comments

@Chary - "The fact that salty banned fools still congregate on "GBAfail" is by far the most interesting part of the blog, and I got a great laugh out of it."

I don't think you fully understand what GBAFail exactly is. It is a website that contains various screenshots/html/pdf captures of members and blogposts (some of which have thankfully gotten the boot such as hacksns) that just shows the amount of well "failures" of GBATemp and it's community. It is the fact that it is down right now and only accesible through IA, but it's not a forum. It's a subsection of the same site that holds the NH logs.

Within regards to me singling out GalladeGuy: I know he has been reprimanded over that blogpost (he whined about it on his profile). That said, given that this guy has such an extensive history in being a piece of shit to other members, and it's quite obvious that this is someone who won't change, noting him out there seems to be appropriate.

Also about Issac at least (i havent seen Porkiepywne active yet), I do feel he is one of those I'd say is in an 'active' staff position and does try his best to moderate the community. Good job issac :) !

@ThoD - I will just stick to point 3 here (that may be counterproductive, but I can see we aren't going to agree on part 1 and 2), free speech is only enforced by the government. This is not the government. This is a privately operated forum, and therefore, the concept of "free speech" does not apply. The problem that is (if you are going to stick with "lets give assholes a chance to see there mistake" narrative) is that more often than not, people don't admit their mistakes, since well, this is the internet, and if you are wrong on the internet, you obviously are less of a human being (note that previous line was sarcasm, but there are a ton of folks who take every attack on their opinion with about the same fury and rage one often finds with football hooligans).

So I'm not anti-free speech, I don't think someone should be legally presecuted for simply being an awful human being, no matter what I think of them, but I do prefer that communities in which I participate are healthy and positive ones, and given how much drama can spin out of control here (if there's any major example of this I'd just point at both instances of the xkyup drama, which until Issac/Minox stepped in most certainly crossed into name calling territory), this community does not really feel like a positive one.

Oh no, I'm well aware of what it is. I just find it amusing that that person still obsesses and stalks people's comments to pin up on their little online cork board while waving it in front of others. Disgusting, if anything, really. But I digress.

Porkiepwyne is perhaps one of the most ninja-like mods I've ever seen. You might not see him post commonly, as I sure haven't, but if you pay attention to the "post deleted by" marker, it's a coin flip of it being them or Issac. As far as I'm aware, he's one of the most active mods/staff (if not THE) on GBAtemp.

@Chary - It hasn't been updated in quite a while, I'm just using it as an example.

^ FYI, Porkiepywne is one of the most active mods there is. He does a great job, he just doesn't make a big fuss about it.

Maybe you should be less lenient towards infractions. "Pull this kind of shit again and you will get a warn". But a warn isn't that serious, a suspension is. What's the point of warnings for warnings?

@330 the point of a warn system is to give users a warning for minor infractions (repeated one word posts, image replies etc)
Repeated offenses will lead to a suspension and if the user doesn't show any improvement, a ban is in order.

Simply suspending someone for minor infractions is the same as locking someone up for tossing out a fag on the streets.

I'm not saying that we should suspend people immediately, just handling out warnings without "pre-"warnings.

@DinohScene -
In that case make it not "threaten with a warn" but just warn instead. According to the rules, there are 10 warns needed before someone is banned. Warning that "next time you pull this shit you get a warn" might be viable on new members, but when it comes to existing members (and to answer the inevitable "where is the line" question: easy: 100 posts changes your title from newcomer to member), that is like giving someone a tick on their fingers for stealing from the cookie jar, and warning that next time you do this you wont get a cookie the next day.

For existing members, just tell them they aren't gonna get another cookie tomorrow.

@330: Even as a mod, I still do understand that sometimes people go a wee bit offtopic and occassionally forget simple forum etiquette. So a simple PSA would suffice. It's the repeat offenders who get under my skin. And I can (and have been) far stricter should the need arise.

@Ev1l0rd Not sure why but I am unable to access the link :(

I've reported dozens of posts from users that keep on posting single images and one word/one emoticon posts.
I can't see the users warn points but I assume that none of them ever received a warning for it.

Edit: and if they do, they haven't learned shit from it.

I simply said what the warn system is here.
Something that used to be enforced in ye olden days sadly.

A little late to the party, but I agree with a lot of this. I don't like when moderators make their activity hidden, turn off their notifications, or perform maintenance/issue warns or suspensions without adding a reason in the field provided.

I think a few of us have had issues with the layout of the subforums for quite a while. I personally believe that a more organized forum could have kept some active devs from quitting. Rinne used to be infuriated about help threads being posted in the homebrew forum. But there is no proper help forum. And the ask section is not intuitive for new members.

I also agree that more staff wouldn't be a bad thing. The thing I do like about gbatemp is that it has owners that are active and always looking to improve the place. While things aren't perfect, there have been a lot of changes in the time I've been here. There is a lot going on, but I'm confident that they take these kinds of concerns to heart.

You must care about this place too to have put so much effort into organizing and sharing your thoughts with the community.

@porkiewpyne - It's a link to medium so im not sure what's failing there. Maybe contact them with it...

@WeedZ - I used to care a lot about GBATemp, but sadly a number of users I really liked talking to/reading about quit the forum for one reason or another, so I got a bid fed up with it.

oh look its the opinion police creep I have been expecting you, honestly people need to chill, someone can call me a dick head twat for something and I wouldn't want them to be banned, I would prefer to call them a dick head back and move on, if they get too offensive/harassing I can ignore them....if they persist I will then report the behaviour to a mod

people are too quick to want people banned and killed (this is a joke/over exaggeration, sorry for people who don't get that, please don't take that seriously), continue down this path and eventually you will go under the wheels for simply disagreeing on a topic, I would prefer to debate with someone and try convince them otherwise rather than just think "oh that person is a Nazi, they should be killed"
