A critcism of GBATemp

>and is by far the largest forum I’ve ever seen
when you literally have never seen other forums

Also, how do you just compare number of users to number of mods? The mods are even more active than they should be IMO. What is your issue with mods? You don't even write WHAT about it is wrong or needs more, just that IT IS not enough.

Extremely arrogant post.

I understand that the op was trying to make things better, but I do feel gbatemp has things as close to perfect as can be in terms of balancing freedom of speech/expression and dealing with real problem player', I wouldn't like people to feel scared to say stuff in the off chance its a forbidden word (within reason as long as they aren't threatening/attacking indeviduals), that ruins communities once eveyone has to think twice about every word they say

as for staff numbers it' very rare to see a shitshow going on for more than a few hours and even then I feel the staff are just trying to let the fires go out naturally than running in with buckets of water, easier to clean up a contained mess than have it spilling out all over the place

there are plenty of people I have had run-ins with on temp and when one of them was suspended I reached out to see if they were taking it ok as they sometimes came across a little unstable, this was the main point I was trying to make, people who act up are often just poor at socialising, the best way for them to learn is by being able to socialise more without being beaten over the head all the time, the person in question is still around and their while demeaour is so much better than it used to be and I would like to think that that' in many ways thanks to them being given a chance to grow here on gbatemp

Well color me surprised, this is certainly a fine and respectable side of gbatemp I don't see too often in the manner of proper discussion without people being childish.

>when you don't know if your included in the problem or not part of it
its safe to assume that im most likely part of in in some form or another

Don't want to see the nonsense of GalladeGuy, OP? Ignore him! That was hard I know so please forgive me. Also, he should still be entitled to his beliefs even if you do not agree with them. Free speech is a thing on this forum fyi.

A suggestion I would like to see come true, a block function. When I hit "ignore" I'd assume I'd see no mention of the user (name in recent posts for instance) but that's not the case. It just hides their posts and not their existence. :O

You don't know me very well. If I know they're there, then I KNOW they're there.

I would gladly promote more members to active mod staff but frankly there are no more candidates to promote in this vast wasteland of a forum. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Few things:
1)How can you expect anyone to trust you w/ that username? :D
2)Don't forget that this is a free website. How many mods worth anything are available to work here for free longer than maybe a few min a day? I'm sure they have lives and other commitments than just fighting trolls on GBA which, except when it goes way overboard or just ridiculous, is usually in good fun anyway.
3)I've hacked just about all my systems and never had any issues with the site. When I did have issues it was normally because I was being lazy and not looking hard enough or not reading everything.
4)The funniest thing is that you're complaining about the lack of staff on a free site that offer's patreon, but are you a contributor? Not throwing that in your face to be petty, and I know not everyone can do it, but I suggest that if you can, and if you want to make a difference, you could think about that.
5)All of that is just IMO, and taking the time to write that post shows that you care about the temp, otherwise you wouldn't have bothered. But in case you are over it one day there is good news: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-many-web-sites-are-are-there-2012-3

@Benja81 though this is a free website, they should be investing the money they gain from ads and their patreon backers to further improve the website and invest in more mods. It does make me question every once in a while "where is my money going every month?". Criticizing the website is critical for helping it get better and improve, and the mod and formatting issues have been bugging me for quite a while.
@Ev1l0rd im glad you brought these issues up, and hopefully one of the 3 or so active mods could bring it up to the rest of the site owners. I've been having issues with all of this for a while, and as I've mentioned above, it would be great to invest patreon and ad money into more things the website needs, vs small quality of life improvements.

That should be the issue then. Maybe Raffles and giveaways should be put aside for possibly donating a bit to possibly add more mods to the site. Maybe have a mod program or something. The site has glaring issues, and maybe a heavy restructure could fix many of them.

It's been said in this blog already, but the current staff are always looking for new mods. Anybody can say they want to be a mod, but actually finding good mods in the thousands of active users isn't easy.
To quote my reply on the first page:
On the note of moderation, I see where you're coming from. Our mod staff is small, and only a few really show an active public face. It's easy to say get more staff, but simply finding suitable candidates isn't easy. For a Contributor, it's fairly simple to assess. Do they have a keen sense for finding news? Do they write good reviews? Are they a nice person? Simple questions. And with limited power to abuse should somebody be wrongly promoted, there isn't much that can go wrong.

Moderation I feel is an entirely different story. The criteria is much more vague, and a bad promotion can lead to a lot going wrong. From my viewpoint, if suitable mod material was spotted, they'd be given a chance. Just look at Issac; he was the latest choice (albeit a while back now) and he's already a Super. He's a great mod.

Edit:
To just add another point here, you took a jab at the site owners in your first reply for not being active. Scroll up. Costello replied before you did.

There is no lack of mods, just a lack of people with the willpower to walk away from a garbage fire. If you're so sensitive that big mean comments that huwt your feewings need to stop existing before you rest at night, the internet really isn't a place for you. See a garbage fire? Report and walk away. It's super simple. Blog? Unwatch or delete if it's yours. Ignore users if you're sensitive and can't handle their opinion, it's a feature for a reason and works reasonably well.
Mods do a fine job, and just because action isn't taken doesn't mean mods have done nothing, they might have just deemed it a non-issue and you just have to accept that and walk away. It's really not hard. The truly bad things will be cleaned up in due time.

I think most good points have already been made, but I'd like to post one small reminder still - If you see something breaking the rules please report it and then disengage. Since we aren't psychic we can't act upon things we're unaware of and by engaging with someone who is breaking rules you're just creating more work for us to deal with later when it's noticed.
