Non-depresing rant about "Depression"

Right so lately i've been seeing a lot of angsty kids/teens making lengthy posts about their "Depression" and "Issues" while in all reality that's seriously just normal shit that you're supposed to deal with if you're already getting so worked up over minor stuff like that you will not survive a minute in the real world

And it's not like i've never done one of these attention grabbing status updates either i'm not innocent but at least i don't do them constantly because honestly nobody really cares except for the other kids who think they have issues as well i'm not bashing the ones with actual health issues more the "Depressed kids" you know who you are.

Look it's fine if you feel down once in a while it's normal for your age your body's changing in a lot of ways and you may feel like you don't fit in and that's fine but for fucks sake get off your ass and do something about it you like games dontcha go to some tournements you don't even have to participate just hang out it's fun!

It's true though, all these kids going through middle school think they're having problems that are so unique

You have a whole life ahead of you, no you do not have some disorder preventing you from talking to people

You're just lazy, small child

Is what I've been wanting to say but that's too harsh

Seeking therapy is one of the hardest things to do. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning airing the dirty laundry all over the Internet but perhaps try to be a little less of a dick about it.

@Judas18 we will stop ranting about it the very moment these kids learn how to not seek attention on internet.

@Judas18 If you still suffer from crippling depression after 13 years, I hardly think you have any insight on how to overcome it.

Depression is incredibly common but most people just think it's general sadness. I agree that the term is used very loosely but who is anyone to object to someone else's state of mind? Most people will have experienced depression at least once in their life.

I never said I was trying to get people to overcome it? I live with it, I try to move on, the world can't stop for me so I move on. What I'm saying is some people find it harder than others, find some compassion for those people.

@Judas18 I actually have some psychological background and can say that these "problems" are not serious and are not worth people's time. I have stopped many teens ages 12-18 stop cutting, and even once stopped someone with suicidle thoughts and tendencies. Please go and stop acting like a psychologist.

If you had a decent level of psychology you wouldn't take everything said at face value. I am not acting like a psychologist, I am sympathising as I too have suffered with depression and I know small insignificant things can set me off on a downer. Your "some psychological" background clearly isn't serving you well. Though props to you for helping those people.

As I do have some knowledge in this field I can say that a psychologist shouldn't help someone with no problems. These "problems" are still problems, but aren't supposed to be shared to everyone. It should be shared to their parents for them to deal with. Not some people on a forum with no clue of what they're dealing with.

And I do agree with you, looking for help or whatever on a gaming forum is a terrible idea, I just think brushing them off so cold heartedly is wrong. But I respect you have a good knowledge of the subject. He'll it was something I was studying for a long time at college, ignoring my own problems the subject of psychology and mental illness is fascinating.

"And I do agree with you, looking for help or whatever on a gaming forum is a terrible idea"

That's what this whole thing is about. Obviously you agree with what we're saying, yet you seem like one of those people that let empathy override their reason.

They will never find the help they need here, so the appropriate reaction is to either ignore them or tell them to take it somewhere else. That is the rational responce. But you somehow find this 'cold hearted'. You believe that we should, on some level, coddle them, and this is more destructive then dismissing them for a couple of reasons. One, it gives them a false since of companionship that is actually artificial and unbeneficial. Two, it reenforces the behavior and perpetuates the idea that you will be rewarded with pity by being damaged and sharing that damage openly.

As I've said before, the hippie crap is not helpful. The world isn't a fair place full of sunshine and daisies where every person deserves to be included and given a medal of participation. The 'over'empathetic mindset is actually more destructive.

It always makes me think of some idiot petting a kitten too hard and killing it. I know thats a horrible metaphor, but that's how I feel.

I'm leaving this argument now because it's just getting stupid. I'm bored of being dragged back to it. I don't agree nor necessarily disagree with your points. Is not that empathy overrides my reasoning, is the fact going for help is incredibly hard. On the Internet we're all anonymous unless we choose otherwise, it's easier to talk about it with random people than see a therapist. I've done both and honestly neither of those helped me, I just carry on and hope for the best. Now I'm done with this, it's irritating.

It's also easier to smoke crack then go into therapy. One is clearly more beneficial then the other.
