when more and more opposing evidence is provided against a belief

ever wondered why people feel more strongly about their beliefs the more evidence is provided to go against it?

this post is nothing more than to increase visibility of a very interesting comic that I think everyone should read. it explains something called the backfire effect, and why we do this.

I figured is cause people are hopeful and they usually cling to that idea as their best solution to things. Reminds me of metal gear solid 2, lot of stuff like that in there. :)

Thanks, have been trying to find their website for a long while. Used to read their stuff way back.

Neat comic

interesting comic. apparently I'm more open-minded than I thought, as none of these facts made me mad.
although, this comic seems just a bit American-centred. the only two historical people I knew from there were Washington and Crapper. Since I'm Christian, I'm guessing the Jesus-fact was meant to make my blood boil the most, but I already knew that; I thought it was common knowledge, and when I first heard it in my life, I wasn't angry about either, since that's just the date we celebrate his birthday, not his actual one.
the only fact that got a reaction out of me was that Washington had teeth made out of slaves' teeth, but that was more surprising than outrageous.

ok, so the teeth thing wasn't as upsetting as it was god damn terrifying. I think this was a pretty good idea, and its nice to have a few things cleared up. I would rather be proven wrong so I can change what I think than be wrong without knowing it.

that's what we'd all like to think we do. yet you and I probably still act this way naturally when one of our main/core beliefs are being challenged, even if it's false.

I won't lie. I don't like being challenged, but I will openly admit when I'm wrong. May take a minute though. I'm a bit thick headed.

Really I wasn't apposed to any of it.

The only change I saw was my heart was starting to beat faster, and that was about it.

Interesting

I didn't really like the comic because none of it makes any sense in an online context. I can already imagine people just trolling and saying "BACKFIRE EFFECT" as a synonym for "triggered" as soon as someone defends a position. Yes, you should listen more, but the scientific part doesn't really reveal all that much to me. I mean, yes, you might get mad when someone challenges one of your core beliefs. That seems kind of intuitive.

I agree with what the comic is saying, but I fall into the side where when my core beliefs are challenged, I don't listen to anything. It's just a part of who I am, and I've tried to change but no luck.

That being said, I will admit when I am wrong (as long as it doesn't attack my core beliefs).

Nothing in this comic made me triggered or mildly interested, arguably the most interesting thing was the teeth facts. The major issue is how this comic aims at the lowest common denominator (Patriotic, Christian American) which couldn't care less about the backfire effect.

In the online context, it's more likely that you will get triggered by trolling than by a proper discussion, as far as I remember, the only time I got angry during a discussion was when they literally shot my argument down because I was young/male/white/Brazilian/etc.

very interesting comic. thanks for linking it. having said that, i think its sorta funny how we respond to someone saying "this belief is incorrect/shit" in the same manner as "What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch" with a subsequent punch to the face. i actually have seen that happen to me before. not in the sense that "omg im getting super triggered by other assholes on the internet and am really losing my shit about now", but when in an argument, i do feel that it is important to be able to respond on the internet, because as long as that person (in my belief) is wrong, i have to do everything to correct that (possibly perceived) mistake and wont rest easy until i have done so.

then again, none of those facts really challenged my beliefs. i knew jesus christ wasnt born on 24th of december, he was likely born in the summer and the church moved that date to 24th of december because it happened to match w/ some other holiday that they incorporated to spread the church. napoleon is common fact by now, and the others only prove that history isnt as beautiful as you might think.

to relate it more to the temp: the drama surrounding certain individuals also has been picked up as such, with some people so clearly adamantly refusing to believe any of it, since it would likely throw someone who they looked up to from their pedestal and their worldview couldnt handle that.

good comic.
