I gave money to a begger but...

So yea...
I went to the drug store for chips and chocolate (guilty pleasure :wub:)
There was a begger at the entrace. He showed me his empty cup, I said, "give me a second"
I opened my wallet and picker up some coin (Not sure but i think there was 1$ and 2$ coin in it)
I gave him in his cup and then, he stopped me before I enter the drug store
He told me (in french but ill translate) :
You know what would be nice? tomorrow it's my birthday, and for 20$, i can get a bed at "L'armée du salut" for a week
At first, i felt bad for him, and said, sorry, but I'm not rich.
But on second though, when I was inside, I was like, hey, I gave him money, hes not happy?
On second though, right now, while I'm writting, I feel like I should have tell him... If yourer not happy, I can take back the money

Seriously, I know we must help the poor people as much as we can, but hey, dont abuse of my generosity lol

EDIT : for those who posted here, please rewrite your comment, if you want ofc
Apparently, there was a bug and i had to recreate the blog
According to @Issac its a weird bug, even him doesnt know what happened lol

It was nice for you to give money to someone and yes it was rude of him to ask for more. I deal with people asking for money every time I leave my house and I usually don't give anyone jack shit, but today I gave a lady $1 for a bus pass and she actually bought one with it (and not booze).

I never dealt with beggers much tell I went on the road. There are people out there that can use the money, but for most there out there because of pimps, drug abuse, lazyness. Plenty out there that lie out their asses then their gone before you realize how stupid you were to fall for it. Had plenty that broke into work equipment in "groups" to steal 100's-1000's of dollars of equipment to pawn off. Sure I'm a douche for saying no at times to people. I might have soft spot for the ladies that have no money for lunch, but I'd rather take a break and go eat with them and make them feel like a lady then anything less. I can offer them money to help me do my job, but if they walk away from work then odds are they're asking because of lazyness. I've seen 70 year old men thrown out on the streets by women to die. I'd rather give them my money.

Beggers come in different forms though. Way to think is Work = solving a problem. Doctors asking money to fuel efforts on curing a disease, but curing isn't profitable so odds are they don't happen.
Donating for a relief fund in Africa your money will never make it there. Here in my city we have the chileda classic which is a race to get people to run and the money raised goes to people struggling with behavior and cognitive stuff. Though the reality is a business will give them assets to produce the race. And in return all money raised will go into their pocket with an interest % until they make that money then the rest goes to the fund. So perhaps they make some money, but it's a fraction of what was donated. A creation of an event to raise awareness, but if you want to donate you need to skip the middle man's middle man lol

btw, there was a homeless woman in Montreal once
She was found dead in a small street
Well she had over 10 000$ hidden with her
apparently, its not an isolated case, lot of begger are actually rich
(im not saying 10k$ is rich, but well... you know...)

Where I live we have so many services for the poor and homeless. If they are not willing to apply for these services then I don't see the need to give them money on the streets. There are actually people here who are known to panhandle and then walk to their BMW's at the end of the day. Panhandling has turned into a regular 9-5 for people.

There was one time i was walking out of a restaurant and there was a person with one of those cardboard signs asking for money. she was on her cell phone talking to one of her friends about some party or something like that. You want to help those that need it, but you just cant tell who really needs it an who doesn't. You really just can't tell anymore.

Next time you find a beggar, buy him a mop and a bucket.
He'd make an honest living cleaning cars or windows rather than begging.

Don't give them the fish, teach them to fish.

I don't give out money to people on the streets. I might donate to a food bank or charity, or help in a soup kitchen or something, but I never give out actual money directly to people. I'd like to know that what I'm giving is actually helping someone fulfill some basic needs, and won't be blown on drugs or just pocketed right before they climb in their Toyota and drive home.

I don't like giving money to beggers or buying stuff from door-to-door sellers, they will keep coming back if you give them money

And when you tell them 'no' many of them are like "pfft, fine"

And some are too persistent, they keep coming hoping you give them something

@SirNapkin1334 yea sorry, there was a bug, first my blog got double posted, then double deleted, even @Issac doesnt know what happened

@Xathya the kind that has a small grocerie store in it

I have had bad experiences so I only buy them hot drinks in winter if they look like they need it...

Had some "normal" looking guy at the trainstation ask me and many other people if we could give him just a little bit money for a train ticket as his purse and phone were stolen and he can not go back home ...
gave him just a little only to see him about 4 times again within 2 weeks ... and he allways told me the same shit till I called the police because he was obviously trying to trick people to give him money

TBH most of the time "beggars" ask me for money, I (correctly) assume it is for drinks, and I some times give them some money anyway... but I am not sure if that makes me an asshole that keeps contributing to their alcoholism, anyway I don't think about that too much.

PS: Sure Germany has an alcohol problem, from the PoV of a foreigner.

S
i had the same situation one year ago.
a begger was standing near to the bank and he asked me for money. he said that is son is a soldier and he want to buy food for him. i gave him 5$ and he said "that's all? i know you have more" on the next day i saw him in different place asking money from another person. and he said to him exactly what he said to me one day prior.

@sergey3000 of course you had more, you just came our of the bank
But he doesnt seem to realise its your money, you decide what you do with it
Damn, begger are exigent today lol...

i rarely give money to beggars in general, but i've recently made a exception:

Last month i flew to Hangzhou China, to visit the West Lake.

When I was wondering in a local streetfood market, i met a very old couple, they are around 70-80yo with walking sticks, those poor souls asked people for some coins and ate at their remain foods whatever they found...i felt so....TT inside, then i gave them all my coins, they thanked me, then proceeded slowly to other people. They've never bothered people around. I wonder where do they sleep at night, if they ever had children...

but, I SAID BUT:

they are physically FAT, is that means it's not that hard to find foods there? lol how for 2 beggars are that fat?

@Youkai never give money to those ones at trainstation: they sleep there, so basically they are already at HOME xD so they don't need money to get ticket!

Probably people from around the place care for them enough to give them food, a lot of it, but not money.
You know, there is a huge surplus of food in the world, probably enough to feed everyone to American levels of morbid fatness. Sure there is also a lot of food around that region you were in.
Hunger is not a problem of food scarcity, but of the cost and availability of logistics (as in moving food from where there is a huge surplus to where it is needed).
