The new 3DS is superior to the new 3DS XL, and I have no clue why the former was less popular.

It makes no sense. It actually had a non-special white color, it was smaller and thus more pocketable. And it actually got faceplates you could replace the standard ones with. The XL just forces you to scavenge special editions of itself to get new faceplates. The non-XL new 3DS also had colorful face buttons, and nothing is more subtle yet satisfying is colorful buttons. Why was the XL more popular if it did slightly less than it's smaller version, and at that, why are the few non-XL New 3DSes (atleast with GameStop) on "sale" only the Super Mario edition?

that's it?
that's the thing that makes the XL worthy enough to discontinue the non-XL?

D
I think it was more Nintendo thinking that every westerner has gigantic ogre hands :/
The XL was honestly kind of a pain to hold for long durations because of the size

The normal smaller model can also fit in your pockets better than the XL models and it's supposed be a portable console (Try fitting a switch in your pocket and without scratching the screen or putting too much force on the analog sticks and other buttons)
Back when I was in Spain last year they had quite a few used white new 3DSes for only 75 euro and I got one there but I guess the normal model was more popular in Europe than in USA and other places

Because people hear "XL" and think that's the better model. Think of all the parents going out to buy a 3DS. 2DS. 3DS. New 3DS. New 3DS XL. They're most likely to get the N3DSXL because it sounds like the best model, if you didn't know ANYTHING about the system.

I got the XL because I like the bigger screens, but I truly did love the regular N3DS's shell idea.

The 3DS XL was out a long time before the "New 3DS" so more people probably purchased the XL. If you already own a 3DS XL then theirs little point buying a New 3DS as the smaller screen will be a downgrade.

Anything else you mentioned is cosmetic and probably not that important to a lot of people. My 3DS XL is the totally black one, no desire to have it covered with any random colours / designs.

I tried to get a new 3DS for my son, but in the end it was cheaper to get an XL variant.

i have a reg 3ds and a new 3ds xl.i prefer the 3ds xl. I wore the hell out of the thumb nub playing monster hunter 4U and generations. Its basically flat now and almost useless as it has nothing to grip.

XL: Big Screen, more comfortable to hold and play with.

Normal size: Too small for some hands and screens...

For people like me, who already owned the Old 3DS XL, it was gonna be hard to make an "upgrade" to just a small New 3DS. However, with a New 3DS XL (or a New 2DS XL), you get "everything upgraded".

There was no New 2DS normal size... I wonder if Nintendo ever planned that out at some point. THAT would be interesting.

My main reason for getting one was that the XL didn't launch in white and I didn't dare wait for one and risk the firmware not being exploitable (what can I say, I want my electronics to be white and hackable if it's a choice)... Most cover plates are terrible though IMO with ugly designs and a lot of them don't match the white or black version of the console. I do like the grey felt cover plates which are the ones I use. They should have made a ton of variants of felt covers.

Still play it almost every day and haven't got any new system since it launched.

I have both, found the smaller WAY after the XL (just a month ago, these are pretty rare), and man, I find the regular size to be infinitelly better after a month of use, also I got a hand of nice coverplates so it feels like having several models in one.

I could not agree with OP more. I have one in Black and one in white. As for the swap-able shall covers, I love them. They make the old one feel new again, changing them every few weeks, and there's so many to collect. The New N3ds regular size had much better-stabilized 3d (for those who used it) that the XL model too.

The Cover plates, Monster Hunter (several types) LoZ Triforce, Monado, etc...

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
