My GBA's IPS panel came today, and it's installed! Come take a look!

I finally have the GBA I always wanted as a teenager... Backlit IPS screen, rechargeable battery that lasts, custom shell and button colors, and a cartridge with every Gameboy game I could ever want on it. The IPS display is stunning, as usual. I believe it's the same panel they use for their RIPS V1, V2, and V3 DMG kits, as well as their Gameboy Color kits I assembled earlier last year. The colors are nice and vibrant, and there's no ghosting or screen tearing from what I can tell. I ordered my IPS screen kit directly from Funnyplaying's website, and saved about $20. Took about 2 weeks to reach me in the US from China, which is standard affair.

My next project..? A Boxypixel non-foldable GBA SP aluminum shell with IPS screen mod, battery mod, and might do the audio mod, not sure yet.

It's very fun, and yeah, well worth the cost and labor to do it myself. Had a bit of issues with the sticky tape on the inside being the wrong size, they sent me the size for an OEM screen... But I cut it up and made it work, the screen is held in very securely now. That was my only issue with the whole build. I tested the kit before installing it, making sure I didn't get a cracked screen or a faulty ribbon. Everything checks out great!

Joke's on you, Ricken... I have NEVER STOPPED playing Link's Awakening, since it dropped in 1993. It's literally my favorite video game of all time. (The remake on Switch was lit too, and I beat it in just a few hours.)

Looks great! I want to order a new backlit screen too! Is it difficult to swap? I'm a total noob when it comes to open up devices. But I have my old dusty GBA with a broken screen waiting for salvation and I believe I have nothing to lose if I try to change its screen. And with all the neat tutorials you can find online, I'm sure I'll get there eventually. I have another GBA working with its original screen but, since it's not backlit, I can't play on it for long and use my phone with GBA emulator or my DS Lite instead.

First, I'd like to try to change its screen, then I'll try to add the rechargeable battery. :D

@tfocosta: It's not difficult, you just have to follow a good youtube video and pay attention so you don't break the glass screen or the ribbon cable. Otherwise it's pretty straight forward. I followed ETA Prime's video without hastle.

@MajinCubyan Thanks, I really love how it came out. I still need to go back in and solder the wires for brightness control, but it's still phenomenal at just 75% brightness.

Looks great. Black and red is so sexy.
I'm waiting on new IPS kits to mod my GBC and GBA. I rather like the "pixel effect" of the DMG V4 kit and Retro Pixel kit, I want it on my GBC and GBA as well (also with the more square LCD for the GBC)

I'm definitely gonna get the V4 "Retro Pixel" screen later on for a future GBC build, and possibly a GBA build, especially if they fit the Boxypixel GBA SP aluminum shell! I use the "LCD x3" shader on my emulated Gameboy games in Retroarch, because it makes them feel that much more authentic having those faux grid lines. B-)

And I know it's hard to tell, but the black is "smoke black", so it is transparent, but pretty dark.

the legal drinking age here in the US is 21, as some of you may know, but i think either it should be 18 or the age you're an adult should be 21.

  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and i know what you may be thinking, "why become an adult at 21? doesn't that mean that banging an 18 year old would be illegal?"
first of all, being in a relationship with someone who's 18 is technically ok, as long as it started when they were 18, but the age gap is still weird depending on how old you are. besides, the age of consent differs between different states
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
also my reasoning for adult age being 21 is because the reason that's the drinking (and now smoking) age is because it "gives them more time to think rationally and not drive drunk"
so you should have that extra time to mature and think rationally before going to serve in the military or vote
