Stimmy dropped. The parts have been ordered...

I ordered the screen directly from Funnyplaying's website because they're the cheapest at just $48 USD, and I have some new button membranes coming from Handheld Legend. But I ordered everything else I needed to build my aluminum (Aluminium?) "Hingeless" Gameboy Advance SP. It's going to be anodized blue with anodized black buttons. I'm doing the USB type C battery charging mod, but not the audio jack mod. (I already have an audio jack adapter that can fit in the original charging port.) I'll be posting pics of the installation when all the parts arrive here in the following week or two.

The unhinged shells would be better if they relocated the cart slot to the top, where there's plenty of space to plug in a GB(C) cart without it sticking out. It just looks odd having all that empty space, rather than looking like a Game Boy Color it looks like a SP without a hinge, which just seems kind of pointless to me, because don't you want the hinge? It serves a purpose after all, protecting the device, and also making it more compact. The OG GBA is a superior form factor, the only advantage the SP has is the protection and portability of the clamshell design. So I don't really get why people would take that away rather than just use an OG GBA.

I had the hinge break...on a used GBA SP from back in the day, but still. If there was one thing I'd definitely would replace on the system it's the charging port with USB-C. Not that I own a GBA SP as even a PSP Go can emulate GBA effectively!

I run my GB/C games from my GBA flash cart using Goomba Color, so my flash cart sits flush.

@Silent_Gunner this aluminum shell has a spot on the bottom edge for a USB C charging circuit, similar to where the GBC has it's charging port. That means I'm free to use the proprietary charging port as a headphone jack. ^_^

I think the unhinged shells are certainly cool and very nice looking, but it still maintains my number one complaint of the SP (and vertically aligned handhelds in general), it's too cramped, maybe as a child the SP was a more comfortable device, though I still remember even then noting how much more I prefer the horizontal alignment of the original device. Also, I really don't like how tiny the SP L and R buttons are, they're just little nubs, the original had such satisfying L and R buttons.

I just love that it's a thick boi like the DMG now, it's made around the IPS mod, and supports a larger battery. It's basically the GBA/GBC of my dreams. And I couldn't care less about the size of the shoulder buttons, especially with how few games ever used them that I actually play. I also don't care that GBC carts stick out the bottom, it won't get in my way while playing, so it's really a moot point for me. I ordered a hardcase for it.
