Virtual Boy

3/9/11. My birthday gift to myself has arrived. I picked up a used Virtual Boy off eBay. After about 20 minutes of playing with it, I'm starting to feel that this might be one of my favorite systems.

Here are some quick photos:

I paid $150 with shipping.

What was included:
  • The original box
  • The VB manual and saftey booklet (in the original bag)
  • The cardboard "battery" insert
  • 1x VB
  • 1x Black visor
  • 1x controller
  • 1x battery adapter
  • The stand
  • The AC adapter and controller mount (not included with the VB originally, sells for $25+ on eBay)
  • Mario's Tennis (with instruction booklet)
  • Red Alarm (with instruction booklet)
  • Panic Bomber JP (with instruction booklet)
All I can say so far is that the 3D effects work REALLY well. The unit is super fun to play and I know I am going to have a blast as soon as the Flash Kit I've ordered for it arrives.

I will be writing a short review of the VB itself for GBATemp after I have had some time to play with Homebrew on the system.

Back to gaming for me!

Almost any question about VB can be answered from http://www.planetvb.com/ which has tons of stuff on it, including a complete list of all known unreleased games and what not - they even have a video of the unreleased VB Mario Land. Plus, if your on the more technical side of things, they have a lot of development stuff and a forum. Worth a look through for VB fans.

EDIT: Looks like AW beat me to it on the Planet VB link. Still a great site anyways though. And Guild actually shares Miyamoto's view of the VB - he thought it was great for a toy, and something cool to have fun with, but wasn't really a video game system along the lines of the GB like people were expecting it to be. And that's why he thinks it's failed. http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#...do-3ds-made/0/1

This is quite the birthday present indeed! I've always wanted to play around with a Virtual Boy, or at least get someone's first-hand opinion on it and its functionality. Anything you read about the Virtual Boy online or in magazines will simply gloss over the under-appreciated system, taking care to wrongfully negatively highlight its red monochrome screen and supposedly nauseating 3D effects.

I'm glad you've gotten your hands on this gem. Like all your reviews, I can't wait for your account of the Virtual Boy!

Glad to hear you won the auction. I'm not too jelly of the VB as I already own one, but I am jelly about your flash kit. Your going to write up a review on it right? Congrats.

it was planned. the guy who builds them asked that i keep it to myself and not give the kit to much publicity. i agreed.

if the second kit (micro sd version) ever gets released by the other guy i'll see if i can pick one up for a review.
