my opinion on the 3DS

So after having a few days to play the 3DS, and explore it, I decided to write this up. Don't know why, but hey, whats the point of blogs when you have a pen and paper at home, right?

Anyways, I bought my 3DS on monday at Wal-Mart. They already had the price marked down to $190. Went and bought a black one, and Zelda. And honestly, the console is frickin amazing. It might be because it's the first handheld that I bought with MY own money from work, or the fact that I just actually have fun with it.

I play Zelda for about an hour or 2 every day, but in short sessions, and then I play FaceRaiders. And I have to say, FaceRaiders is an amazing app and fun as hell. I don't think I've ever had so much fun with a stock app before until now.

Zelda 3D I was skeptical about because I am one of the people who consider Ocarina of Time on the N64 the best game ever. And while the framerate sucked (I didn't know it was bad until a few months ago when someone posted and told me how bad it was), I didn't even notice it. It was just simply a stellar game. And I was skeptical about hearing all of the stuff about the 3D version. Updated graphics, and motion control were my biggest gripes. Started the game, got the slingshot, the motion control actually works! Thank god.

Honestly, if people look passed the price, and look up the upcoming games, the 3DS is easily worth the price, especially if it's coming down. The thing is just so much fun, and that slide pad destroys the nub that the PSP offers.

Don't get me wrong, I love the DS/L/i/XL, and I hold dear to my heart the first moment I recieved a gameboy color for my birthday along with Pokemon Yellow, but the controls and somewhat gameplay of the games, seemed clunky, blocky, and slow paced. Even the racing games suffered from it. But with the 3DS, everything feels so smooth. I'm playing Zelda on my 3DS, and I've played Ridge Racer on my friend's 3DS, and the whole experience just seems smooth.

Now, does 3D actually work? It depends on what you think it should do.

Nintendo and everybody else, advertises the 3D on the 3DS as having 3D without glasses, and have everything jump out at you. But that's not the case with me. I've found that, with the 3D on, my vision gets sucked into the screen more, so I feel like I'm in that world more. And while I don't have things popping out at me, being in the game's world, I get a connection with the game better.

I wish people would give the 3DS a chance. It's a great device. The only thing that prevented it from selling like hotcakes, was really the price. But now that it's below 200, I feel as if it's worth it now, more than ever. I say that, because before launch, I thought at $250, it was not worth it at all. I feel a handheld should never be more than $200, as a lot of the stuff that they put in the machine, I don't use. I mean, I'm hardly going to check out the MiiPlaza at all, and I only turn the 3D on for certain parts of Zelda like the cutscenes, or if I'm fishing.

At this price (below $200), I would say the console is worth the price in every sense. FaceRaiders is fun as hell, and the upcoming games list is amazing. And I would say to people to get one now before the big number of games come out and it'll be tough to get one. I'm glad I changed my mind and decided to buy one for $190 (and I still get in the Ambassador Program too, though I'm having a bit of a hiccup with that for some reason, so if someone wants to help me with that, it'd be appreciated).

The only downside I'm finding, is that there's a lack of an alarm clock on it. I don't have one, and I don't have a phone, and I always have a DS with me, and the DSL and XL I own I've used for alarm clocks to wake up in the morning to get to work. I don't know if the 3DS actually has one as I haven't found it, or if I have to buy it in the eShop or what, but that's a bummer for me. I was probably one of the few people in the world who actually used the alarm clock (though I hate the 24 hour time Nintendo has, it's stupid).

I'd also love to be able to put pics that I already own on the computer, onto the SD card and look at them on the 3DS. I googled it, but it still didn't work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong tbh :/

Anyways, as you can probably see (though you probably won't have read), I love the 3DS. It's a great machine and I strongly recommend it to everybody.

It really is. And for people who haven't tried it yet and that's why they aren't buying. Try it. It feels fantastic.

The only thing that I don't like, is the system looks like a collectors item, and looks like it should not be played with at all. With my DSL, I would throw it onto the couch, bed, or wherever soft whenever not in use, and not have to worry about it. But with the 3DS, the whole glossy thing to it, it feels too brittle.

Really it makes it look brittle? Well you could buy that black Zelda case. Someone bought it for me and it looks awesome.

It sweet you like it. Like the depth, sometimes tho, I wish there are pop out things.

When items pop out of the screen in Zelda, it makes getting them even more worth it. Make sense?

I'm trying to find a Hori screen protector, too expensive for what you actually get, so I'm waiting. And I don't want to get a case for the console, I shouldn't have to y'know. It was a design flaw. I do however want to get one of those Nyko Power Paks though.

It didn't feel brittle to me. It can take some punishment from what I can see.

IDk how people get scratches on the screen. I had my since a week from launch with no screen protector, yet no scratches.

Nyko Power Pak sounds nice, but for some reason I didn't see myself getting it. Have
to make due with the battery that there.

The scratches are a real issue, i have some minor scratch on mine. I intend to get Nintendo to fix it (i think they're doing it for free within warranty). The bottom screen juts out somewhat. When you close the clamshell, it can push up against the top screen. With even minor pressure (putting it into my pants pocket was enough), the clamshell will close too much and cause the bottom screen to rub against the top screen and potentially cause a scratch (it generally leaves a smudge though). The rubber feet aren't enough to stop it either (which is apparently what Nintendo does to prevent further scratches). For the time being, i've placed a small piece of paper between the screens when i close it (a thin cloth would do too) to minimize further scratching.

Very much a design flaw. Otherwise i'm a big fan of the system and look forward to the future game library.

I'm glad you like it! It is pretty awesome, and it will only get WAY better. Awesome games are lined up. I know what you mean about it feeling fragile though...I take much more care with it than I have with my past DS systems and I feel much more safe with my XL. If they ever release the Nyko Shock N Rock for it I'll buy that. And you are a luck duck, getting in on the Ambassador Program and only paying $20 more than it will be in a week! And if you're confused about the program, just make sure to connect to the e-shop before the price drop date, August 12th. And download something, just to be safe. :P

Well quite unfortunate.

Guess I'm lucky.

So ShadowSoldier, what game are you looking into next?

I THINK the bottom screen is rubbing against the top screen for me. I say "think" because when it's closed, it's hard to tell. I used to put that styrofoam thing in between it during breaks, but that's become such a chore now it's not worth it. I just close very very very softly. I'm thinking about doing that thing with the Xbox feet and putting them on there.

I did. I downloaded the Netflix thing, and I linked my account on the 3DS with my Club Nintendo, but it doesn't show on the site that it was linked. I thought I was supposed to get 40 coins, which I don't think I did. It didn't say I did. I did get the Netflix survey thing though.

I was going to pick up Rayman 3D after I 100% Zelda. But that will be at the end of the month as that's when my next cheque comes in. If it wasn't for Zelda, I wouldn't have gotten a 3DS game at all to be honest lol.

i used the DS alarm clock for years.
and you're telling me there's no such feature on the 3DS ? D:

I haven't been able to find one at all. Luckily I have a XL for home, and DSL for at my friends.

I would use homebrew for the 3DS, but dammit this is one machine I want to go legit with y'know? I just wish that I could use one system for everything. *Sigh*

Nice positive view on the 3DS. It's a really nice handheld and I even thought it was worth it when I bought it for $250 (never denied it was a bit expensive though). How's the 3D effect work for you on Ocarina of Time? Had a couple friends say they saw double sometimes when the 3D depth slider was up all the way. I just think their eyes aren't trained to see the effect at that level (but I don't have the game either so).

Can't believe that this is a positive review thread on the 3DS. Not gonna lie, I rarely see that here. Maybe I'm blind? I don't know... but hey. Glad you actually enjoy it. Can't wait to get a hold of one. ^^

i highly suggest getting a case if it seems likely to break to you
i heard the zelda cases are good, get one off ebay or something if you can

and make sure you get a screen protector, but in some cases it might not be enough

my hori screen protector has round marks underneath the place where the touchscreen touches it, doesnt go away

@arnold i see double on my 3ds too while im at max, however they go away if i wear my glasses
its a bit of a pain putting on my glasses if i want to play though though :/

I really thought this would be a negative review along with all those other hate threads ^^

I'm quite contented with my 3DS, I've enjoyed Samurai warriors, recently got Zelda and it's beautiful.
I feel the system has a great future ahead and with upcoming software arriving it'll really push the system even further.

At first I thought it was another hate thread as well, haha.

Anyway, the 3DS is quite a fabulous system. But I just find Nintendo limiting it's potential. Just have that feeling.

Well, you could purchase Photo Clock from the eShop (it cost $2).

Although, it would have been better if it was built in.

I could, but I shouldn't have to y'know?

I get it, the XL had the Photoclock, but I never used that, I just used the alarm in the settings. But now even THAT'S gone from the settings in the 3DS. So far that's my biggest gripe with the console. A feature I used and they took it out. I feel like the OtherOS users who had Linux taken away from the PS3.

I seen some double but only in some cutscenes. Like when Shiek is talking to Link after he pulled the Master Sword, I saw an outline of Shiek. Or when talking to Raaru, there's pillars of whatever in the background, I saw double of that. But that's it. So far I haven't seen double of anything except for Link, but that's because I was holding it at an awkward angle.

Interesting. I've played the 3DS for a while (yay for friends with modeling jobs), and basically did not like it. It looks very glossy (fingerprint attractant!) and does not do for a gaming console. However, I'd probably end up borrowing it as I really want to play OoT. (I'm one of the players that really did not buy the Nintendo 64 because of the controller and other assorted problems.)

I liked Ridge Racer on the 3DS - but I'm one of the people who most 3D effects do not work on.

Because of my friend, I wash my hands every single time I go to use one of my electronics. It's one of his rules if you want to use his stuff, so they don't stain or anything, and it sort of caught on to me. Surprisingly though, fingerprints don't show up much on the 3DS.

Ridge Racer 3DS is fun, except it's basically the PSP Ridge Racer, which I played through and did not like lol.
