God damnit, I just snapped my SD card in half...

Going to screw down my Pi 3B into the Retroflag SNES case, I forgot about the SD card, and I heard that all-familiar "snap" after screwing the board down... Hours of setup wasted, my config.txt file not backed up either... FUCK MY LIFE!

Update: I am a goddamn idiot, there was a small piece of paper I purposely set aside in the box that I didn't read...

The largest card I have is a 400GB, so I can record over 24 hours on my GoPro without having to swap cards. I'm afraid to buy any larger, I don't wanna lose that much footage if the card dies. Back in 2017, I had a Galaxy S7 with a 32GB card in it, and I was at a Krewella concert taking pictures too fast... It killed the SD card in my phone, and I lost everything. I no longer have faith in SD cards being reliable, regardless of brand, size, speed, etc... I've had all kinds die on me, even SanDisk and Samsung. (The one that dies in my phone was a Samsung EVO, orange and white 32GB).

I bought a Samsung EVO 64GB back when they weren't cheap and it ended up being a dud. Haven't bought another Samsung card since.

I'd say don't trust any SD card that has been in active use (specifically writes) for 2+ years, they aren't very durable. But usually, you're still able to recover the data (might need to use data recovery software though) because the failure mode of flash memory that is worn out is that it simply goes read only.

@wownmnpare I have plenty of SD cards on-hand, no worries. I keep no less than 8 extra cards, minimum. 2x 64GB, 2x 32GB, and 4x 16GB. And I don't buy SD cards online ever, only in-store, as to not get fakes, and can easily return it if it's defective.

@Sophie-bear Ouch, I feel you there. I am only going to buy SanDisk from now on, unless someone more reliable and more reputable comes out. In my opinion, these are how I rank SD card brands:

#1: SanDisk
#2: Samsung
#3: PNY
#4: Kingston
#5: Lexar, ONN, and all those other no-name trash brands with high yields in their manufacturing.

Little-known fact: the ONN brand cards from Walmart are just rebranded Lexar media that didn't meet Lexar's yield specs. So if you buy them, don't count on them being reliable for long. It's a silicon lottery minefield.

I had the impression that a lot of the major "brands" can arbitrarily change their suppliers, so you can have two cards that look the same but have completely different origins? I definitely recall a time when people enthusiastically endorsed Kingston "Made in Japan" cards over other Kingston cards.

Anyway, gigantic SD cards seem like a bad idea to me as it's a lot of data you can potentially lose all at once.

I've broken those too, just on purpose when I didn't want anyone recovering my files from a dead card. Only had one full size SD die on me, in a Wii I was backing up the NAND when the power died. And was fine, the backup and SD were toast.

@Jayro I've been a big fan of Silicon Power SD cards lately. Never had a problem with them, even the high capacity models.

@Crazynoob458 He literally said multiple times he's using usb flash drives.
@Kwyjor Indeed, the Japan cards were faster than the Taiwan ones. Doesn't really seem to be a thing nowadays though, all the cards of the same type are made to the same specs.

@Jayro I've never physically broken a card, but two that I have died. (they "permanently" write-protected themselves) One is a blue 32GB full size SD that I used to use with my 3DS, before I upgraded to a 64GB Samsung micro SD that I still use with my N3DSXL. I forgot what the brand was, but the label had this little rainbow line at the top. Other one is a 64GB Sandisk micro SD that I used with my tablet.
