Lethal injection

We have this cat we found outside a few months ago. He wasn't in such a good shape but he seemed to get better after we took him in. But now he is obviously very sick and in pain. We have to put him out. There's no other option. That's a fact. But our financial situation does not allow for a lethal injection by the vet, which costs about a 100 bucks here. My parents can't really pay for it and they don't care enough to make it a priority to pay, with the risk of having to declare personal bankruptcy a little too close. But the cat is suffering and I can't sit here and do nothing. So I decided I would make the injection myself. I bought these and decided to induce extreme Hyperkalemia by injecting a lethal dose of potassium chloride(KCl), which is what's used to give the death penalty in the US. It seems to be the most humane and clean way to do it. I would like to sedate him or give him a powerful painkiller before the injection, but I don't seem to have the necessary resources to get my hands on some. If you would know about one that is easily available, it would mean a lot. Otherwise, it just makes me feel a little better to talk about it.

Well, it's better that he be dead than be in severe pain an agony, you did the right thing.

I wish him a a grand adventure into whatever is next, be it utter darkness or a surreal paradise. May he enjoy his journey to the fullest.

I offer my condolences as well. Though they may seem small I give them with absolute sincerety. No one should have to lose a member of any family under any of those circumstances. Mourning in this case is a proper action and can only serve to better the image of your pet. My you rest in piece.

sorry guy. our house cat of 13 years passed away last summer and you might not think that it would hit you but it does.

i would like to thank you. my infant son has to take an oral medication 3 times a day but it's such a low dose that we are having a hard time finding syringes that are both small enough and long enough to fit in the bottle from the pharmacy. those syringes you linked to look like they'll do the trick once the needles are taken off. thanks.

I did it.

I had found a vet willing to help and was getting ready to go when he just ran out from an open door and got hit by a car. Sadly, it didn't kill him. He would have had to wait for his blood to run out before death finally came. And it was gonna take it's time. So I shaved his leg, found a vein and injected. Died within a few seconds. Better than if I had let him there.
I still can't believe it happened.

Been mourning since the last few hours. Just came online.[/quote]

Damn. What a way to go.

Again, my condolences, man. You did everything you could have possibly done.

I can never condone the killing of mammals, but if I had to end a sick animal's suffering and I couldn't afford to give it a lethal injection, the easiest way would be to just shoot it. A small caliber (larger caliber would be better) directly to the base of the skull on the back of the head, aimed forward into the brain would take out the thalamus, which is the relay station of pain (and all other sensations). It wouldn't feel anything because once you destroy the thalamus, no pain sensation can reach the brain. The cat probably would have felt the initial shock of impact from the bullet, but the thalamus would have been obliterated before the neural impulse even had a chance to register as pain. The thalamus is shown by the green arrow in this pic. In this picture it would be just behind the sphenoid sinus. I first learned about this in university. When I was a teacher's aide for a systemic physiology course, I used to pith frogs so that they could be dissected alive with their hearts still beating, and they wouldn't feel anything.

If you didn't have a gun you could have just chopped off the head with a machete or stuck its head behind a car tire and backed up the car over the head to crush it. But I would be hard-pressed to try anything as vile as these methods, even if it was to put the cat out of its misery. Not to mention it's illegal to do any of these things.

Giving a cat any drug or medication designed for humans would have unpredictable effects since cat physiology is different from human physiology. Different species metabolize drugs differently. I wouldn't try it.

Sorry to hear you were in such a difficult position. At least the cat doesn't have to suffer anymore.

Sorry to hear...

at least it is over and done with now... the cat has passed on, and in due time you will move on and find more happiness in life.
