Translating Pokémon is so hard...

I think I should have made it in portuguese on a portuguese speaking forum, but since I use no one, lets do it here :v
I'm here trying to translate pokemon platinum, but I got a pause from my part there to work on the Pokémon sun and moon demo before the actual game came out, else no one would like to play it ...
So yeah, my plan to do it is more to get a complete translation on my resume, so if I can translate the history text and leave the battle in English is a good thing already... then I can finish the rest more calm later

for TL;DRrs, read only the "titles" at least lol

But why it's so hard for me?
1 I can't do stuff alone.
-This even disturbs me! I get confused with some stuff like slang or way the character speak , I don't know if I'm doing it too chessy (well, for pokemon its good, right?), if the therm is o, if sound strange in any way or I don't know what to put there , them I go ask some friends and i KNOW it bother tem.. sometimes just talking why I have the difficult there I can think something and make it work. Also to hack the game, I'm totally noob on 3DS rom hacking ... Good that people are fasto make tools to work with pokegames but I'm more an artist here, codes make my head go blue screen...

2 I'm too perfectionist/ big sence of quality
-When it come to pokemon, mostly of people here want a translation just of the story, they want the stuff like itens and moves keep in english, some complain about groups that do translate then and ask for a patch with these in english, but why? Just because they are used to it? If want the game in English, play the english version (I get this when I complain about localization lol)! I see pokemon in over 9 languages coming today, every one have their own translation of everything (even [human]characters names, that I think is stupid, VERY stupid, even more on the global pokemon contry context it even had but was localized and flattened in a 4Kids way util XY).
So yeah I want to make it like official, like a good localization too, like every other language does, if an oficial pokemon translation come with half of it in english, I would be sad... even the basic of having the english pokemon characters/monster names I would, because why being lazy of something that might be cool and every other language have (except some lazies like Spanish and Italian >w> hahah), why not us ? "because of "we are used" ? come on, no Brazilian even can pronounce right mostly of these names :v it's sound terrible xD the Japanese names would be easier for us to talk (if romanji ...)
So my plan is using out the language slots to make more options like Original (translated pokemon names, adapted people names that get changed ... good that the demo have only few XD), English names and Japanese names (because I'm an otaku :B)

and with this...
1+2 adapting or not?
-So, why you just don't do the way you think better and show everyone?
I only thought about that while typing it all ... lol
well this is not just fearing the rejection but some say it's not good to face the fandom, I know my views of quality don't please everyone and mostly of people used with that bad translated and adapted anime and english localization, I dream to make it if was for real... like REAL, not " we just translated it, it's good"(maybe I see far from what the actual translation do ...)
Even if I translate the title (like Sun and Moon to Sol and Lua )some people get mad about this.. even every language having it translated, only English and Japanese having it in .. english lol)
I know the english version was important, if wasn't it, the game would delay to get on west, like FE (and probably come with better localisation?), and I know that every countries that don't have their version, goto te english because, generally, is the easiest to be known or at least understand some few stuff , but I don't see why to be stuck on that like this, there are plenty opportunities, the Italian and Spanish trash this potential of adding something to the series, with people names instead of the pokemon ! if dog is cane and perro there, why do charmander have to be kept charmander? Why the english name have to be in more than one language than English, but the Japanese that created it all only in japan ?
And I'm not even going to talk about the logos ... or we gonna be here forever.

4 so MUCH stuff and how to adapt them?
-This is the more technical problem here actually, than being from myself XD
Even the story text on this small demo are too much!
So yeah, I gonna translate the itens, and here a problem ... I know, itens is something that get carried with the series along... Like Pokéball and it's description at all is there, on the next game, on the next and the more next, but more get added, so if I keep doing pokemon, some of the work is done, but getting from the milde (like on Platinum) is really a bunch, and a problem of different groups doing it is that a lot of variation(or no translations) happen, and I'm totally out of going with the non translation, bad translation/adaptation of the anime/very delayed TCG, and also being loyal to the english, since they aren't to the Japanese version :B
For example, the pokeball upgrades in the Japanese have all names in english(if I'm not wrong ), Monsterball, Superball, Hyperball became Pokéball, greatball and HUltraball(even having a nice yellow H on it's design ... well, like Speedball that have an S and still got renamed to Fast ball :v).So, not totally sure if I gonna translate or keep in english, but Bola Grande/ótima (from great) sound terrible, Super bola sound better, so maybe I gonna go with Japanese here, maybe only use the "poké" one...

Then going to the others like Potion , the Japanese was like "Wound Medicine", so long so I think " poção" is ok ... but looking it's upgrades they became super potion, hyper potion... wait! these are how the balls where named in japanese! so why not get the english balls reference for these two? " poção boa" e "poção ultra" sound better than " super poção" and " hiper poção" :v but well no one would get the reference , maybe just get angry at me for " changing" the stuff...
but then I asked one of my friends and he told " just keep it in english man" and I got all unmotivated, everything I told before here came my head and wow..
good that the demo have just few itens

I know an actual official translation to portuguese never care about this all and would be just a translation, who gonna get paid for the work aren't crazy for the series like me :v just like the one responsible for the anime , TCG and pokemon special/adventures manga, here ... they don't even know what they are translation =3=)/ but well, is how I dream here ...

Argh it became so long, sorry and thanks for reading!
I should have been translating instead of writing this x3x

Figuring out slang and how some odd phrasing or something might appear to readers is part of the fun. If you are bothering someone then maybe wait until they say you are bothering them than assuming, for the most part as long as you show you tried something, thought about it and do not repeat things endlessly then you are probably OK.

On names then relevant, no particular answers to your conundrum but relevant

That said I always find the final fantasy god names amusing where you get various gods and folklore borrowed from somewhere, translated to Japanese and then translated back as almost a proper name. Good times.

In this instance I think I will have to say don't translate for others, translate for you. If you are being paid or having it in a portfolio then play to that but in this instance do for you. You will probably get some people that claim their English so very better, to say nothing of the... interesting position that US culture takes there, but there will doubtless be others (it is a game aimed at kids after all) that are happy enough.

On names of items then if people know the English ones and you are OK with that then go it, if you are going to translate then just make it clear what is happening.

All this said it is a nice inversion of what I see elsewhere -- most of the time when a new pokemon game hits in Japan first we get endless requests and projects for menu translations.

actually I'm having much fun with Kukui and the skull grunts XD It's also nice with characters like Hau since he is that cool and nice buddy.
well I wait, I don't go like " answer me already" but I can have a idea of it by the way they answer/ not answer at all :x

oh Gaijin goomba XD not sure if I watched this already but I can't check it atm... but Yeah I also have some doubts there about making a nice name and keep a good reference, and some time I get in doubt of doing something with a good base of the reference or just sounding fun is ok
Someone told me "sounding good is better"... but I don't wnat to make a bad reference like hitmon family, even that everyone love them XD (referencing sports with worng counterparts, like boxing to jackie chan, teakwondo with bruce lee and a TOP with capoeira ... well we can see in 80/90's USA works that they know nothing of martial arts since ninja turtles and karate kid both where based in kung fu XD )

Like my idea for beedrill, there was :
- Furabelha (furadeira [driller] and abelha [bee] this sound so much funny xD thinking " it's for kids" would make choose this, but drill is an wrong reference of this monster creation...
- Spear [keep the japanese because yeah .. simple and match the poke]
- Justabelha (Justa and abelha again, this sound more epic and keep the reference of it's string being like Justa lances, but isn't everyone that know the name of this sport so it's complicated )
I know from who don't know portuguese this don't make much sense but yeah :v I think this is pretty amusing for someone say it's don't work with portuguese language or that is a bad name just because they are used to the english...

Pokémon was a thing ... now they are being amde with every langauge they want, so no reason to fan translated anymore XD But people where hyped to see, actually LOOK the game even without reading, but wanting to understand at least what they where choosing XD now It not needed anymore so yeah :v

But you are right, I must do it for myself the way I think it's better, if the one that play like it or not... well I can't please everyone... and someone must like this XD even the oficial don't please everyone, like I'm not with the english or, like I discovered recently, chineses also aren't happy with the oficial work :v

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
