WhooHooo - I've finally gone Wireless

OK - I know I've been behind the times & I've only really got 1 PC (with no WiFi built in) but I've finally taken the plunge & brought a Wireless Router
(A Belkin N150 to be precise)

Connecting up to PC (via cable), setup & got it running (fairly) smoothly - although had a little problem with it not 'accepting my ISP settings' first time round (I'm on VirginMedia using a Cable modem & it's not shown in the ISP settings - only NTL and Blueyonder for some reason), but repeating the quick setup wizard a second time & it all went through

I even managed to get both my DSi and Wii to connect up to the network first time (what a relief) AND I even got my Mobile (Nokia 5800) working on the WiFi as well (& since I'm on PAYG - I can now browse the internet while @ home without it costing me a fortune in phone costs :yay: )

It was SO simple - search for WiFi signal named '********', connect & enter the pass-phase & it's done - I just can't believe how easy it was........

.... Just a couple of small things now to decide....

> The Belkin has a Firewall built in, so should I remove the software Firewall on my PC ?? (It's the free 'Comodo' firewall one) just to free up a few resources, & perhaps make my PC boot up that little bit quicker ??

And should I put a password on the 'Belkin Setup page' since I'm the only one that uses the computer ??

(I've even got a VERY old laptop lying around somewhere - also without WiFi - might even try & get a WiFi dongle for it & see if I can get THAT on the WiFi network)

All I can say is.... Why did it take me so long to join the WiFi brigade ??????

:hateit: ARRRGHHHHH.. just as I'm typing this - I lost my Internet connection, so I switched off/on my Modem & it 'seems' ok now - but why did it happen ????

Yes, remove the firewall on your PC. You don't actually need one, as the router is hardware NAT.

Instead of adding a password to the login page, go into it's settings and if the ability to access the settings page over WAN is active, turn that off.

And yes, wifi IS that easy. Thing is most people are idiots and need an instruction manual for a can opener.

I wish I had wireless but my step dad is too retarded to reset the router and he doesn't want anyone else touching 'his stuff'. (We got the router off his brother since ours died and it has a password on it that he forgot)

I'll just disable it from using StartupCPL for now - just in case

Nope can't see an option for that - guess I have to stick with how it is now

What - like me you mean ;) I remember the hassle I had trying to get my 1200 baud parallel port dial-up modem to work all those years ago

Cable & Wireless > NTL ______ > VirginMedia
________________Bueyonder > VirginMedia

'Blueyonder' was in fact a rival company that came out to compete with 'NTL' (which was originally called 'Cable & Wireless' ) - then both companies got taken over by 'VirginMedia'

@ Rydian: yep I think you're right - I've looked in 'services' & there's still a 'Comodo helper service' running in 'Automatic' which I can't stop
I've set that to 'Disabled' & hopefully it won't start next time I reboot the PC
