Microsoft preventing emulators from running on Xbox's Retail Mode

Microsoft has been dealing with a lot of iffy applications and software running amok in their stores since they enabled almost anyone to get a hold of development access to their systems starting from the Xbox One console (done mostly as a detriment to avoid their systems getting hacked, like what happened with the Xbox 360).

Due to that, there has been a constant fight between devs and Microsoft to get rid of those unauthorized applications from appearing in their store. Some might have seen some threads going around about RetroArch running through Retail Mode on Xbox consoles, and while RetroArch did end up in the store from time to time, the people in charge of the port had to constantly deal with Microsoft taking down the application constantly.

However, it seems like Microsoft got tired of this game of cat and mouse, and has finally decided to disable and prevent running any type of emulator application from running on any Xbox console altogether, with any attempt to launch an emulator app throwing error code 0x87E1002D.

The developers have shared the recent news on the Xbox Emulation Hub Discord server with the following:

It's been a good run guys!
As of today, it looks like Microsoft finally decided to fight back, and that faster takedowns weren't good enough.

Error 0x87e1002d
"This game or app can't be launched as it violates the Microsoft Store Policy."

If you want any hope of Retail Mode emulation ever making a comeback NOW is the time to fight them on it.
Take it to Twitter, take it wherever you can and complain to Xbox about this decision.

So what are our current options for emulation on Xbox?
- Dev Mode is still very much an option.
You can either pay the stupid $20 / €20 fee, or you can simply make a new account set to TURKEY and pay $2 / €2, literally 1/10th the price.
- If your currently installed retail mode apps still work.
This will likely not last long, and they probably already don't work anymore.

-Will continue doing retail mode uploads from here on out?
Probably not. Unless this gets resolved, I'm going to focus on publishing weekly Dev Mode updates in #dev-announcements with our specialised cores for RetroArch.

While running the emulators through Dev Mode is still viable, it is unknown if Microsoft will tackle Dev mod next in any capacity, and it's still unknown if running applications like these from Retail mode will be available at all in any foreseeable future.

Had only 5.5 GB left. Maybe that was the culprit. After console reset it works now.
I'm not sure of the minimum for dev mode, but you can toggle how much space to devote to it. it's not worth using much though as you can put almost everything but the apps themselves on usb. you're also limited to 30GBs on the system itself anyway.

Because emulators are illegal, yeah....
I don't think it's just emulators. the ftp app has the same message, even though it can't access the most important files on the C drive. you can access them with advanced file explorer. there's a legit version of this app on the store, which has a button combo iirc to link you to a full access version of the app on the store. this does have access to C. it's probably too late to get it now.

Again if they do that they will start to get hacked. Also Dev mode has the legitimate use of developing games for the console, including games that run in an emulator.
they were going to require dev stuff every 90 days iirc, then backtracked after a lot of backlash. they were probably like "oh, fuck! we're getting hacked!"

Yeah that was insane. Modern games take YEARS to make. Only way to release something every 90 days would be to port open source stuff or make crap games or apps.

not sure what they were thinking. I'm not sure if a full app was required or just that you had been using dev mode for the way it was intended, but Microsoft backtracked almost instantly, kinda like when they were going to increase either gamepass or gold in terms of cost. backlash from the community caused them to renege. I think both Microsoft and Sony listen to fans, but Nintendo would probably be like, "I don't fucking care, they'll still buy our games!"

Well...was only a matter of time wasnt it? Doubt they will cut of this in DEV mode tho.
There was a statement that said there was no plans to remove this ability on DEV mode.

Wild, wonder if they are going to come for dev mode next.
According to a statement we got, they have no plans to. Seems like they just don't want you installing custom apps in the base OS.

@The Real Jdbye, I thought about that and I have blank DVD's and Blurays but honestly after like 90 songs I just listen to it a couple of hundred times toss it out and burn something else or have like 2-3 CD's. Florida here the heat in the car tends to ruin the CD's after like a few months even commercial pressed ones don't last too long.
