So I've found there are codes for DS games to run in 16:9. Is it possible to patch these games to run on the Wii U?

Have you seen there are new screen layouts that has been created?

Have a look to this great work:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/add-many-more-screen-layout-options-in-ds-virtual-console-games.574254/

Also this way is easy to install, maybe easier than tuning with codes that seems to be related to DS emulator and I am not sure it works on DS VC

Yeah I'm using that but it's not setting the actual games to 16:9. It's only stretching the screen area.
I'm talking about true 16:9 like the AR codes, but they seem to not work on Wii U.

Are there a list of hex codes?

There are lists of Action Replay codes: https://forums.desmume.org/viewtopic.php?pid=25853, https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-play-nds-games-in-hd-widescreen-16-9-21-9-32-9.538988/

But I'm suggesting you figure out what the code is actually editing in order to do it manually.

As Vague Rant points out in the thread I linked to before, many games store the aspect ratio of the view port somewhere then use that to render the correct amount of world. We are looking for the value for the DS's original 4:3 ratio:

Code:
55 15 00 00 // old value: 0x1555 = 4:3

and changing it to:

Code:
72 1C 00 00 // new value: 0x1C72 = 16:9

If you can't identify where this replacement needs to happen, you could just do a blanket find-and-replace, but this might break the game if it happens to use a value of hex-1555 elsewhere.

What games are you interested in? I may be able to help parse the AR codes.

Do you have the hex codes for Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros?

Mario Kart's code on the 'Temp thread is
Code:
520775D0 00001555
020775D0 00001C72
D2000000 00000000
by @KazoWAR
or
Code:
920775D0 00001555
120775D0 00001C72
D2000000 00000000
920789BC 00001555
120789BC 00001C72
D2000000 00000000
by @KazoWAR
which i would interpret as looking at address 020775D0 (and possibly 120775D0 and 1207898BC - use Find and see where the relevant value shows up?) and replacing value 1555 with 1C72 (it may show up as 55 15, in which case you replace it with 72 1C).

The DeSmuME forum gives
Code:
12147E04 00003D30
but I am not sure what this actually does.

You could also use DSATM https://www.gamebrew.org/wiki/DSATM to patch the codes into the .nds without doing the hex editing yourself.

New Soup needs to work differently as it's a 2D game and we can't squash the viewport in the same way. There is a video here: with a patcher here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5mrrwp92i7qq38f/nsmbws.xdelta?dl=0 to make the game run in 16:10 for the 3DS. Then you can inject that .nds and muck about with the screen layout to get the aspect ratio correct. The DeSmuMe forum has a 16:9 code
Code:
52062358 E1854804
0200DC5C E3A00EC3
0200AE48 E3A03000
0200AE4C E3A01000
02062338 E3A0C015
02062340 E0050C95
02062350 E1A00000
02062348 E1A05425
02000C00 E1844A0E
02000C04 E3A00015
02000C08 E0040490
02000C0C E1A04224
02000C10 EA02B3C6
D2000000 00000000
520D1BEC 00001555
020D1BEC 00001BFF
D2000000 00000000
520ADB30 E59F0014
020ADB2C EAFD4C33
D2000000 00000000
you could inject with DSATM.

In any case I would recommend trying to run the patched games first on DeSmuMe on your computer before sending them to the Wii U, in case what you tried causes as crash - there's no point spending time injecting and installing a game that definitely doesn't work.

Hey mate I just wanted to say that I tried out that DSATM method and it works! Even when injecting the roms over to Wii U!
Thanks a bunch!

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.
