I saw Pokemon Silver as a VC title there, Smea may have more surprises than we think... maybe.

he showed that off a while ago, he managed to swap a repack a rom into a virtual console to prove it could be done but he did say he isn't going to release it

I wonder if it is technically possible to port a SNES emulator now.

Still, a Homebrew channel would help to keep the homebrew development in order; having a bunch of launchers for every tool seems unproductive.

Not really, things were going this way on the PSP and it was quite cool, but having a channel to download and update homebrews could be cool...

I don't understand what most of these terms mean but I'm going to nod my head anyway.

*Nods head vigorously*

Yes, quite.

A usermode only thing like this is piracy proof.

We keep forgetting that running emulators is, 99% of the time, piracy, unless you own a stash of Virtual Boy games (or whatever) whose ROMs you're playing. For that matter, creating a media player and watching videos on the media player is likely to be piracy a large percentage of the time too.

You could argue that with the media player at least you're not pirating anything that Nintendo cares about, but emulators are likely to run things that Nintendo, or people who got licenses from Nintendo, do care about.

The main effect of not releasing exploits that are useful for (main console) piracy is to encourage shady companies like Gateway. Not releasing exploits to stop piracy is like banning condoms in order to discourage premarital sex. It doesn't discourage sex, it discourages safer sex.

Ah, yes - I mostly meant 3DS (and possibly DS) games though.

I'm probably going to start looking for an appropriate 3DS now. I'm rather excited for this, and I have an AK2i so I can run the installer without needing a GW to run anything.

I don't have a 3DS so maybe this is obvious but I see that [Y] icon there, too, when he's running from real NAND with v4.2 firmware. The top screen logo is obviously custom when he gets to the point of actually selecting it in his homebrew mode but is that just an icon that bottom screen icon something he conveniently borrowed from another, existing app or am I missing something? Would this mean that he hasn't (yet) gotten the lower screen icon part figured out or just used a shortcut in this case?

Well, emulators are not considered piracy tools among some respected hackers as far as I can tell because it takes real work to create them.

No, I'm pretty sure that's a custom icon that appears on the real NAND as well. I'm actually not sure why he launches the DS exploit first; maybe there's some check that prevents homebrew that he had to patch out.

It's different because, at this point, nobody can stop piracy for those systems. It happened, it's done. Emulating them on the 3ds is just a convenience.

Wonder what would happen if he posts a screenshot to miiverse XD

Also I think nintendo would be a bit pissed about emulators...they are after all wanting you to buy those games again on eshop....even though it's a limited catalogue

I think it'll be hilarious for them to release emulators Nintendo themselves will never release even if hell freezes over :D
