I prefer a flash cart. I like the convenience of playing all of my games from one cartridge, instead of lugging around all the different cartridges like a tool.
Flashcarts for me, here are the main reasons :
-First, I'm a noob, and it's easy to brick your console with a custom firmware.
-Second, when you buy a flashcart, you still have a support service.
-Third, when people pay for a service, the work you pay for is most of time well done. I mean nowadays nothing is really free.
-Fourth, a custom firmware needs more time to be developed and released, so it could take several months or even several years. The people, who usually work in the underground and do this as a hobby, have a work or maybe are students so they don't have as much time as hackers, flashcarts developers or manufacturers who do that for passion and money. A flashcart makes the hack easier and quicker.
You do realize that with custom firmware you could possibly run ROMs from your SD card, right?I prefer a flash cart. I like the convenience of playing all of my games from one cartridge, instead of lugging around all the different cartridges like a tool.
1. The later custom firmwares of the PSP were much easier and more straightforward to install than what you have to do for Gateway. And you only had to do it once.
2. A custom firmware can be uninstallable.
3. You're probably not familiar with the name Dark_AleX
4. Read number 3.

I mean the one that goes on the left side of the 3DS (right side on the XL), not a microSD.
I think CFW is a lot better than flashcarts
However the only system I know of which has CFW is the PSP
Correct me if i'm wrong

I guess it's due to the UMD and its difficulty to make a flashcart with.
Unfortunately, with the advent of smartphones and other open and more powerful devices becoming more accessible, a lot coders from the PSP scene (that didn't mysteriously disappear like DAX and AhMan) moved onto the aforementioned devices. There's still plenty of people interested in homebrew on 3DS and PS Vita, but it just seems like they just want it for running backups, so a lot of them are happy with flashcarts. There are still great coders chipping away at the 3DS, but I don't think it will blow up like the PSP did.Who wouldn't prefer a proper custom firmware? But it's not always possible.
The PSP homebrew community thrived because of custom firmwares. I'm always hoping something like that will happen again for some portable that has a lot of horsepower.
I was hoping that the PSP's homebrew tradition would carry on to the Vita. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. The Vita is some really wasted potential for homebrew, with its power, its incredible OLED screen, its dual analog sticks, we could have had some of the best portable emulators on there. Who knows. Maybe someday when Sony has totally abandoned the Vita (which is pretty abandoned already), a kernel exploit might be found.
wondering what exactly the people wanting cfw are doing right nowthe reason 66% of ppl prefer CFW is because all gateway does is make you wait
