Lately there have been some malicious users spamming the site, but even before, occasionally there is 'generic' spam, like most forums get.
Can we not make the first 5, the first 10 posts of a user hidden and need to be approved by a mod to be shown?
So, other users will see nothing, or simply see 'awaiting moderation'.
And once a mod comes along and looks in the list, they can either approve the user/post or ban them.

It seems other forums have some things like this, why can't we have it here?
Is it too much work or something?

I just hate seeing people post junk here :)

just ignore it and report it. Eventually they'll get bored. Every once and a while theres a serial spammer but its not that often. It may be alot of work for the staff to get rid of them while they're active, but I can guarantee you itd be much harder for them to go through the posts of every new user and approve them. Everyone flipping out over spam just gives them attention and keeps them coming back longer than they would if you just ignored them till they got bored.

Im a mod on another site, all you can do.is report the post, all mods get an email. Than someone, logs in, removes, deletes, bans etc. There really is not an automatic system.

I just got an idea, get the ip and email from his first account. When he reregisters under a new name, send him an email (his original and new) and pm with info you can gather (general location his ip pings to, internet service provider, etc.) stating that his malicious activity has been reported to his isp and cyber crime authorities of some "internet vandalism law". See if that spooks him.

With that logic we could just IP ban him. But he's using a VPN.

We should just avoid paying attention to spam, every time a stupid post or thread is made there are 1000 replies, those threads will be eventually forgotten and erased
That's another issue in its own. It seems to escape people to just report and move on. Then there's those that intentionally fuel the fire.

>IP banning

https://pthree.org/2009/03/08/the-sheer-size-of-ipv6/

Now, what about IPv6? Well, to start, it addresses 2^128 possible IPs, which is 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 possible addresses. There are a lot of technical points of interest with IPv6. First, it is NOT backwards compatible with IPv4, which means we'll be living a dual IP stack for some time. Second, 64-bits of the 128 in IPv6 are dedicated to your Ethernet hardware address, commonly referred to as the MAC address. Which means, that your ISP could give you the other 2^64, or 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 unique IP addresses when you sign up for an account.

"IP banning is a sustainable practice."

*Yes, I know IPv6 is not widely adopted yet*

That's not even.. what?

His original account ip would be his actual one. Get info on that, tell him you know where he his, who is isp is, and that he's been reported. If he's some kid, as I assume he his, he would be scared that his parents would get a call from their isp or some internet authority. What does that have to do with ip banning?

"Original account IP" does no good if he signed up over a VPN. And the point XavyrrVaati is trying to make is why go through the effort of trying to "scare" them when we could just ban them. We have the warning system to "scare" people. Those who actually care tend to shape up after the first warning.

He's using a VPN. So we don't have his IP address.

I meant for the sake of getting him to stop making dupe accounts. Idk about you, but if someone told me I was using such and such isp based in such and such state, Provence etc. And that they have been notified of a cyber crimes from my ip, I would be a bit shaken.

Also, I just assumed his original account would have his actual ip, he had no reason to proxy before his first ban.

We don't know his original account. And I doubt that would stop him, he could just pair tor and his VPN together and pretty much make it impossible for us to prove.

This. Seems like Peter is just an alias, used by a disgruntled former temper. We can all guess and speculate, but we know nothing for sure. Eh. It's a bad game of tag.

You know what really needs to be done? People need to start getting warnings/suspensions for bumping spam. There doesn't seem to be any real punishment, either that or the same people just don't care and keep doing it.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
