PS1/2 How to tell your burnt ps1discs are bad vs. Modchip

So i just bought a used PS1 scph7502 which according to the seller had a modchip that he was able to play games his friends had copied for him, and I've been trying to make backups of some of my games but they don't work. What I get is the "please insert ps1 disc" or whatever it says. The ps1 came with an retail tekken 3 which works without problems.

Now, after reading some I realise that this might be because the games I've tried burning so far (Spyro 3 and Crash Bash) have antimodchip protection.

However I'm not too confident in my discs being well made because I used my laptop burner (which now stopped working because of a "power calibration error" from imgburn..), as well as not high quality TDK discs. I dug up some verbatim printable azo discs and I tried to burn a backup of crash bash, but it still didn't work.

The question is as the topic says, what error/message do you get when your disc gets rejected?

I'm can add that I'm not 100% sure that the ps1 has a modchip since I got it so cheap...

You could try a disc swap, if the game then loads, it may point to a faulty modchip.

Actually, I believe if I get Crash Bash to actually work through the swap trick, then it means that I don't actually have a modchip, since the antimod should've detected it. I'll try and see this evening if it works.

So I was able to do the disc swap and my crash backup disc worked, which I thought would mean that there was no modchip since it would activate the antimodchip protection. However, newer modchips bypass this. Still, just to be sure, I opened up the ps1 and found no modchip installed on the main board. I noticed though, that the lid already came with a spring for doing the swap disc trick, which tells me that the seller probably thought that playing games this way meant that he had a modchip in it...

Anyways, since I'm interested in getting games running by disc, and eventually getting a psio, I'm gonna try and find someone who installs ps1 modchips still.
