Official English version for 'MOON', an "anti-RPG" game, coming to the Switch next month

Self-described as an "anti-RPG", MOON is a game that was first released on the original PlayStation in 1997. However, the game was never officially localized until now, that is. Indeed, a team of its original creators worked on bringing an official English version for the first time ever, and exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. Toby Fox, Undertale's creator, even cited MOON as an inspiration for his acclaimed game.

What's this about "anti-RPG" you ask? Well, it's better to check it from the new trailer and official description:

[What’s an Anti-RPG?]
Have you ever played an RPG and wondered…
“Why is it OK that this hero is breaking into houses and stealing items from people’s drawers?”
“Why is it OK that this hero is killing thousands of innocent monsters?”

MOON is a game about turning those tropes upside down, and seeing what really happens behind the scenes of your favorite RPG videogames.

[Story]
One night, under the silvery light of a full moon, a young boy is suddenly sucked through his TV and into a videogame — a classic JRPG called “Moon World”. Following closely behind the game’s brave hero, the boy begins his own journey to recover the world’s missing moonlight by collecting “Love”.

As Moon World’s hero loots and levels up by cutting down monsters for experience points — you know, as heroes do — the boy releases their souls and collects their “Love”. MOON is not a game where you fight to level up — your own progress comes by gathering lost “Love”!

As you explore the world, you’ll meet a crazy cast of weird and wonderful NPCs. Observe their strange habits and daily routines by visiting them at different times and days of the week, and learn their secrets to uncover even more lost “Love”!

"Now, please, open the door!"

[Key features]
Conquer a game with a clear conscience in this anti-RPG! Save the monsters’ souls! Follow the real-time daily lives of Moon World’s NPCs, day and night, all week long!
Collect dozens of “MoonDiscs” containing original songs, and choose your own favorite background music!

MOON will be available on the Nintendo Switch this August 27th.

Wow a straight-up port of PS1 game is not something I expected to see in 2020. The concept is pretty much Undertale to a T, so I gotta wonder how much inspiration Toby Fox took from this.

Yeah, whenever my friend would go on and on about how unique Undertale was I told him he should play Moon and Knights in the Nightmare. Now he can!

This looks weird for sure...

Hope this derives on a PSX/PSOne fan translation project.
There was an attempt to translate this at one point with the script being around 95% or 100% if i recalled but i guess no one knew how to hack and insert texts for PlayStation 1 games back then so no one bothered finishing it.

Thank for letting us know about it. This gives more hope on a better translation process. Anyone know of PSX/PSOne games hacking tools?
Long ago, I've made some RIPs (reduced size working games without videos/streaming audio), but that was it, would like to try somthing.
Thanks in advance.

I hate ordering stuff online if I can go buy it somewhere close to me, and everywhere anymore will give you a discount only if you order it online, bs. Should be a discount if I go pick it up, not order online.

I love it for most things most stores you just shows the receipt online and they scan it

Makes it easy for incompetent restaurant staff that don't know how to hear an order
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Mostly for big purchases, I want it in my hands before I pay. Like a tv, I trust picking it up myself, before I'd trust it being sent thru mail/delivery. (Broken screen, etc) But yea if I can order online, then pickup at store is ok, but not all places offer that.

Thing is, if you break it driving back to your house, it's your fault. But if the delivery driver damages it, it's not your fault.

Most people that haul big tvs have empty trucks or know enough not to set it face down
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Then I gotta send it back and wait another week or two. I have a pickup truck, with a extended cab, so no prob for me.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Most manufacturers pack it well enough where they aren't that dumb to let it happen
