it's cool, i could've made it more clear. The game runs but locks during the encounter with the T-rex if my memory serves me right. Sadly i can't read italian. But that gives me hope, maybe there's a spanish version that does work

As you can see from my quote, my response was to @Hammyface, who uses a DSi, and not a 3DS, of which I have no experience.

I repeat that the game, with the english translation applied and on DSi, crashes after the "toc toc", before the guy gets out of bed.
Mother 3 should really be marked as unplayable/working on the compatibility list. You will not get a pleasant experience with it and I'm not sure you can complete it this way. I only played past the first town or something and got randomly soft locked at different events, although consistently. It happens so often I that listing them all made no sense.

Anyways the post you quoted me on earlier referenced the compatibility list and the special note about Mother 3 there. If you follow those steps then you should be able to get past the T-rex on DSi and maybe 3DS if I remember well. I know for a fact it works on the untranslated ROM, can't remember if the English translation got further. It is both nice and unsettling to see the Italian translation behave differently than the others.

I know that after I did my tests a new version of the translation got released for the anniversary of the game, so that might behave differently to what I got last time I checked. I wouldn't have high hopes seeing that running the patched rom gives so many issues though.

Thank you for stepping in and for the thorough explanation.:)

I have tried this (english patched) game 3 times and it always crashed at the same starting point, while you claim it randomly softlocks: also this is very strange.

In any case, as for me, I tried this game out of curiosity and to be able to help others, since I personally don't care and I never liked this series' art and setting. So going deeper into the problem is not in my interest.^_^

Yes, I was probably not clear about my tests being on the untranslated Japanese original Rom. As far as I remember the English translated Rom would freeze at any point near the house you being in. As stated in the comp list you need to run another rom on beforehand and then proceed to launch Mother 3 from within gbarunner2's own menu, in other words not exiting to twilightmenu++.

It is sort of similar to how multiplayer and sound effects in Contra are affected by launching another rom first.

please force yourself to play earthbound, is a wonderful game. I played it for the first time in like 2013 and i made it a little space in my heart and mind as one of my all time favorites, despite being older and not enjoying games as much as when i was a kid

Hello everyone. Does GBARunner2 needs YSMENU to work? I heard that if you use GBARunner2 on the default kernel and try to run games, they won't load. I have a R4SDHC clone and I only managed to get a certain version of Wood kernel to work on it. I have a 2DS and I know that I can run GBARunner2 from Twilight Menu, but I want this R4 to be a present and to run on a DS. I can get one to make some testing. Thanks

If GBARunner2 boots on that Wood kernel and works, then gba roms will also work normally, as per gba compatibility list (the one for flashcarts).
But why don't you try it yourself?

i've played the first game from star to finish, and not liked. but i can understand people have different tastes, of course.

anyway, i like to thank the gbarunner2 developer. i have been playing a bunch of gba games on my ds xl and i feel that compatibility improved A LOT since last time i played, 1 or 2 years ago.

Thanks!

Making something similar for the 3ds (be it for gba or ds games) is a lot harder, because in 3ds mode most of the ds hardware is not available. Emulating a full 2d and 3d engine costs a lot of cpu for example. The ds has a 2d engine that is an improved version of the gba one, which makes it possible to just use that with some small interventions instead of emulating it.

I've finally made a version of the wifi branch that you can actually try out for yourself.
https://github.com/Gericom/GBARunner2/releases/tag/v20190826-172450_7ae1123
With this version you can set the master and slave DS mac addresses in the /_gba/gbarunner2.ini file (example ini in the attached zip file). Note that you shouldn't open the settings when you have set the mac addresses as they are not preserved when the settings are overwritten. Eventually this will be replaced by a proper in-game linking mechanism where you can pair with a nearby gbarunner2 instance.
The wifi linking is still far from perfect, and the results are very dependent on the game and also on the environment (noise and such that can negatively influence the wifi transmission).
I managed to get stable linking in Mario Kart Super Circuit at home with two dslites (I haven't tried with a dsi or 3ds, so it could be that using arm7dldi makes linking less reliable for example). You have to go in and out of the multiplayer link menu a couple of times on both dses before it works (for whatever reason). After that I was able to play a full race on both dses without it disconnecting. I've not tried many other games, so let me know if more games are working for you.
Do I need to modify the mac addresses in the ini file to match the mac address of the 3ds?

Yes, there's more info on the WikiTemp page fyi. Also, the version linked in the post you quoted also isn't the latest Wi-Fi link build anymore, there's a newer one linked on the wiki page.

Ok got it. Tested with Mario kart nd got it to link up after a few tries. Racing was working fine. Anyone got this to work with Pokémon trading yet? I tried close to 50 times with no success to link up between firered and leafgreen. It goes into the initiation phase but as soon as I press A to confirm the link, it tells me an error has occurred. I know the wiki says only emerald battling worked, but maybe someone on here was able to get Pokémon trading to work? thanks!

I was testing out gbarunner2 with shining soul 1 & 2 and, while it saved fine with the first game, shining soul 2 kept giving me a failed to save prompt when I try. I'm testing it out on a lite, DSi, and n3ds with an Ace3ds+ and it's playable. I don't know if this save problem with ss2 is because of the flashcart itself or something else, I'm not sure. Just noticed that the game wouldn't let me save while other gba games I've tried saved fine.

If this is something that I can fix with just modding them then I'll look into that, but I do want to use this cart on my ds lite as gba just looks better compared to the other systems I have at the moment.

Hi:)
If you check the compatibility list you can read, about Shining Soul 2: "Saving is broken. This is a regress. Use commit 6522414 (2018/11/01) arm9 version instead".
https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/GBARunner2#DS_Compatibility_List

I tried using both arm9 versions (and also tried arm7 versions along with twilight menu just to check) but I kept getting a white screen when booting into any of them, the top saying r4(ds). When looking at them in twilight menu they give me question marks for their icons instead of the gba.

Have you tried the specific versions from 2018/11/01 (not the most recent)?
Try the 4 versions found on this page :):
https://gbatemp.net/threads/gbarunner2.451970/page-57#post-8359865

Yeah, I tried all 4 that had that date beside them, but just in case, I also tried the ones you just linked to and they also seem to having that same problem. The latest ones work fine, I'm able to boot into them but these from 2018 are still just showing me a question mark icon and a white screen when booting into them.

Sorry. I don't know what else to recommend. Unfortunately here or there this emulator always gives problems.
Personally, I use a GBA flashcart in slot2 of my beloved pink DS Lite: it's the best solution if you want to enjoy gba games to the fullest.;)

I hope GBArunner2 will work flawless someday like VC Injects on a 3DS, would be awesome to have everything GBA/DS on 1 DSi
