With the chips now being visible and not scratched. Has anyone done a cost to make analysis for bulk manufacturers. Since Unlock Switch said they are open sourcing their flashcart then I think I am going to wait a while but want to know what the cost to make is for clones and will wait for the price of the open source versions.

Don't know what the BOM is but I doubt that it will drop to rock bottom prices for us consumers. The BOM should be low but there's more to the pricing than just that.

Reason being that even if it were eventually open sourced, not many folks would be willing to risk ninty's wrath by making it. Logistics of manufacturing and distribution isn't exactly a walk in the park either. As such, supply would still be largely constrained and by extension, pricing as well. This is a gray area trade with no honour to speak of, so every one of them would be out to gouge us for the risk they are taking. Too low a profit (relative to legal risk) and they can't be bothered.

Heck, just look at the current situation. Even MIG themselves are having issues trying to fulfill orders for the cart, let alone the dumper which has not had any word of going into mass production any time soon.

Cheap isn't necessarily a good thing either. The cheaper versions could have the same profit margins as the more expensive ones, just that they maintain it by cutting corners (eg cheaper components). Some may even come with hidden limitations like time bombs, being unable to update, etc. Or they do not keep up with firmware updates.

Bear in mind that this won't be a real "open source" either because it is essentially ripping MIG's and just dumping it on the net - ie more of a leak. It's not a consensual collaborative effort like Linux is. Every one of them will be doing their own thing and keeping their versions closed, probably even unlocked's future updates. Even when stealing from each other, there is a surprising amount of jealousy to safeguard their "own work".

Just my 2 cents.

It's not really for Chinese games. I matched up a US release of Mario Wonder to files in one of the folders. Game still won't load though. I have the correct XCI.
Again, coming from a guy who doesn't have one, but like, I thought I heard the initial data file has to come from the same physical cart as the xci, not just the correct xci? I could have things confused though.

How did the assumption that the initial data is not tied to the physical cart itself come about? I have seen that being mentioned repeatedly, even by those who have yet to receive their own carts. I don't recall MIG ever saying such a thing. Was it an overly optimistic/eager conjecture raised by a random person that got passed on many times in forums until it became a "fact" despite no one ever having proven it to be the case? Was it a result of conflation with the cert?

It’s kinda funny seeing some of these support posts about the MIG on reddit. Most are wondering why the switch gives a game cart read error but then don’t have any game files at all on the SD card. Like no wonder it won’t work lol

People don’t read it’s as simple as that.

Or for some reason some even think they are just smarter than the rest of us and just need to “try somethings” and that’s why it won’t work for anyone else apparently lmao

Yeah, people continuously think that the "for backups only!" thing is the usual legal-protection euphemism that stuff like R4 has always used and that it probably is "insert rom=magically works", when no, no they really mean it only works on full dumped backups.

I'm sure it's just a matter of patience for dumpers out there to catch up and rom sites start including packages with the initial data files paired with their xcis, but some people just can't wait.

I just got 2 mig switches in the mail today. It's laughable how easy it is to smuggle these in to the states, after my initial SX Core orders got seized by customs. Have not had any issues like that again since then.

However I'm going to return these 2 mig switches, they are impossible to sell.

People said the same thing about the SX chip and look what happened...

Although the utility for a MIG is a lot less interesting because it merely allows running backups and not third-party code.

I think that's because the MIG isn't on any official sanction list yet and as such, isn't a "contraband" unlike the sx that got "outlawed" after the ninty suit. If ninty ever takes action against MIG and succeeds, it might end up having the same custom status as the sx.

IMO, the chip is a rather different thing. Mod chip in itself is "useless" compared to the MIG. If one doesn't know how to solder and do it well at that, it effectively becomes a paperweight. Worst case, one loses the entire switch. That means ordinary folks have to turn to experienced tinkers who charge a premium for modding service. And that itself also has its own problems such as not having any locals (especially competent ones) providing such a service and the cost to ship one's switch out of the country to someone who does and back, including possible taxes to and fro. It should also be noted that the sx chip also came with a sx license so it cost more.

That's why it is sold cheaply otherwise the take up rate isn't going to be high, never mind the inherent risks (eg damage while soldering) that come with a hardware mod. On the other hand, the MIG is a relatively low risk noob friendly device. While the MIG cannot compete in functionality, it more than makes up for it by being a fuss free solution as far as backups/piracy (or at least that's what the crowd is hoping to happen in time for the latter) is concerned.

heh I think the buy/sell on here has too many FBI watching it.

I just searched facebook market place for sold items, these go for $80 each which is roughly as much as I paid for them. no profit in it, these are going back to China.

That’s an old video what “issue” are you talking about ?

I think his talking about people buying games or used games. taking the unique ID from it. giving the game back. but still using the unique ID on they roms.... or something on those lines.

I think, that was talked about from the start by people from the scene.
