I'm on emunand 10.8 I think and regular firmware 9. Haven't played with my 3DS for a while, what is the best thing to do?

CFW it mate. No need to worry about emunand or updates then.

Go for B9S. I used to have Gateway but it broke. The need of a flashcard to play my backups... Well, kind of frustrating. You can do many more things too with CFW, to be honest.
