Review Approach:
"In this [game], you can literally get the pants beat off of you" -Some generic gaming website quote
On the urban streets of Akiba, you (as the main character) have bought into a scam, a jop posting that says it pays in figurines (Chavo!). After not reading the fine print, you wake up with augmented senses for material possessions and the ability to sap peoples happiness away. You try to protest, but find you are strapped to a table in the some darkly lit basement. A female character breaks into the room, frees you and you make your escape. She explains that you have been turned into some variation of a literal vampire in the sense that you can be killed by sunlight. After a strange tranceferal of blood which she claims will keep you from turning all the way, you head down to your hideout, at videogame cafe.
You hideout is a little hole in the wall run by a creepy looking old man who serves terrible food. Here, you advance the story, learn about the other members of your group, and visit your sister for upgrades. She reminds me of Naomi from the No More Heroes games for some reason. You'll be happy to have her even if she is an annoying little Otaku who gouges you for prices to tape something to your existing weapon.
Most of the game advances by you taking either story quests or side missions from your phone. Your phone is used as a menu for the game and it works well. You can change your outfit, check on your ficticious "Pitter" account, and much much more. Eventually you get a camera app that lets you take a picute (yeah ok hold on, I'm getting to the good part) that distorts over sythester. You can start fights with them by brushing them aside. Winning keeps the people on the streets safer and grants you yen to spent at shops.
My "magazine of beatings." Also, note my lack of shirt lol
The fighting system is pretty straight forward. You attack with your equipped weapon, which can literally be anything from a magazine, laptop, bell, to a gumball machine. Yeah you heard me. You can perform 3 types of attacks, one aimed at the pants, one at shirts and one at headware with the X, O, and Triangle buttons, respectivly. Repeatedly attacking an article of clothing will damage and tatter the rags until they are compromised enough to be ripped off. To do this, you will have to hold the corresponding button to tear off that article. This is a key element in fighting. Ripping off a piece of clothing greatly hinders the asailant and cuts their heath down by a third or half, depending how much else they are wearing. Ripping off all of an oponents clothes reduces them too a screaming mess that disolves in the sun. The saving grace in this game is that you (as a male MC) get to rip off female clothes, but also other males. In fact, in your first real battle, the MC moans and makes a comment about how he wishes the organization thats after them would have sent girls. (Editors note: This game would be taking a pretty decent hit in the score if it was limited to only ripping off girls clothes. *Glares at Monster Monpiece*). Another balancing factor is that the enemies can also rip off your clothes if you arent careful, since you are affected by the same biological adjustments that they are.
When you trigger multiple layers of clothing to be stripped, you can enter a button time event to chain strip any enemies with vulerable clothing. You will be given a button promt and a large window of time to press the correct corresponding button. You do this over and over till you have either missed or stripped all available rags. Stripping all the opponents will end the battle.
The game is short, if you are fast you can probably blaze though this in under 9 hours and make it last 11 or 12 at most. With New Game plus and multiple endings (I looked these up for convience sake of the review) help with the abrupt ending, but no matter how you slice it, the game feels short. The other big problem I had with this game is how far up its own butt it is. Yen or money is refered to as "Fundage", because just writing "yen" is apparently too boring for Xseed. Other jokes come straight from Japan with cultural references that those of us outside of the country won't really get. Other than that, if you take this game for the story and fun of beat em up, you are sure to have a good time.
Verdict
- Vibrant artwork for character portraits and models.
- Somewhat interesting premise
- Smooth fighting system, not necessarily Arkam Strip but pretty good
- Balanced, not nearly as smutty like I expected.
- Somewhat muddled story
- Dialogue is not the greatest, but not really something to complain about.
- the voice acting however, is
- Load times are naptimes
