Time to party like it's 2000 with the Ressurection of Diablo II. Grab your friends, and your swords and get ready to slay Diablo and his minions once again. But this time, in glorious HD.
In the middle of 2000, Diablo II took the gaming industry by storm, quickly building an immense playerbase of avid fans, many of whom exist to this very day. Even up to the moment Diablo II: Resurrected was released, and I'm sure beyond that as well, you could always log onto Battle.net and find hundreds if not thousands of people still making and playing games of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.

Diablo II is a treasure, but an ancient one; over the years it became increasingly difficult to play and accept the jank that comes with a 20-year-old game built for early Windows. While most of the gameplay aged well, its lack of modern luxuries continually became more apparent. A locked incredibly low framerate, tiny 800x600 resolution, and essentially forced full-screen. Unfortunately, this gem of a game was being lost to time by technical limitations. But then, finally, in 2021 Diablo II: Resurrected was announced.

As one would expect, this remaster sought to modernize and fix all existing issues with the 21-year-old pc relic, and it nailed it. All of the old issues Diablo II faced as it aged were repaired: modern resolutions, modern framerate, modern graphics, and even some modern conveniences for a cherry on top.

With the remaster came a new coat of paint, and boy does it look nice. There was definitely some worry after Blizzard botched the art style of Diablo III, but in the end, they nailed it. As you can see from the screenshots, they did a wonderful job breathing new life into the old graphics. Everything feels just as it did wandering the lands of Diablo II in the early 2000s--you even get that lovely feature Halo's remasters got that lets you toggle between new and old graphics any time during gameplay. Even the audio got a facelift (that toggles with the graphics), old iconic sounds that couldn’t be recreated reliably have been left alone but all of the music and many other sound effects have been cleaned up and upgraded just as they did the visuals.

A main concern many had, was the possibility of changing gameplay, fixing old bugs, etc. Blizzard did end up making changes, but all of them were for the better and none of the things affected any core gameplay. They added three tabs of shared storage, as well as expanding storage in general. You can now toggle seeing items on the ground rather than cramp your hands holding the key for hours, and ladder exclusive items and runes are now available on non-ladder and single-player. And of course a plethora of other minor tweaks. The Andy bug remains intact, however, the somewhat popular “ebug” was fixed. Perhaps the only controversial change since it was a relatively harmless bug that only served to make companions a bit less fragile.

Diablo II itself is certainly a little dated, however it still stands up as an incredibly fun experience that I'd recommend to anyone. While Diablo 1 and 2 didn't invent colour-coded loot rarities or 'loot fountains', there's no denying it's the reason that hundreds of games after it have adopted many of its systems. Eventually bringing rise to the "looter" genre. It’s still fun to make your way down skill trees, improving yourself and finding epic loot to flesh out your build. While things like its hotkey system can feel a little dated, overall Diablo II still plays extremely well for a game of its age even by modern standards.

The remaster isn't without its faults of course--it isn't easy bringing an ancient game up to speed without inevitably breaking something made during the early days of coding. Diablo II: Remastered has some minor quirks and differences, but nothing a regular or even advanced player will likely ever notice. There are also some bugs but in my 30-40 (or more frankly) hours of playing, the only bug I ever experienced was an issue where the map overlay didn't properly wipe between runs, creating some very weird and confusing maps. It really didn't come up often, in 30 or so Countess runs I had to restart my game twice to fix it.

At the end of the day, Diablo II: Resurrected was exactly what I wanted. It's as close to the original as humanly possible, while fixing some of the more annoying issues from the original game. I'm able to experience the wonderful world of Sanctuary, slaying the minions of Diablo with my friends just like I did back in elementary/highschool. Anyone who ever wanted to try Diablo II or couldn't get into it due to technical issues, Resurrected is the perfect way to play. Diablo II: Resurrected is a wonderful gem and it’s fantastic that a new generation of gamers can properly experience it, and even on a console if you so wish. May RNGesus guide your droptables and get you some sweet loot.

Verdict

What I Liked ...
  • Same classic gameplay
  • Beautiful new graphics/audio
  • Nice modern tweaks (toggle show item, larger shared storage)
  • Ladder-exclusive content now in non-ladder/single-player
What I Didn't Like ...
  • Some minor bugs
  • No more ebug

Gameplay
Diablo II is quite an old game, but the gameplay still manages to hold up even today. Each class is varied and incredibly fun, and searching through mounds of loot for those perfect items is just as enjoyable as it always was. Resurrected introduces a small handful of new bugs, but they hardly get in the way of gameplay in any meaningful way.

Presentation
Every aspect of the visual and audio remaster is perfect. Resurrected perfectly embodies the dark, dreary feeling we know and love from the classic 2000s game while bringing it all into the modern era flawlessly.
10
Lasting Appeal
Just as it always was, Diablo II: Resurrected has immense replayability. There is always better loot, always new builds, always new classes to play and try. As well as the ability to play and enjoy the game with friends and strangers alike. There's a reason people have been playing Diablo II for two decades.

Overall

We really could not have asked for a better remaster. Despite the age of the original game, Resurrected has released with only a handful of issues amidst an avalanche of goodness. Anyone looking to get into Sanctuary to slay Diablo's minions, your wait is over.
Man, it hurts that Starcraft and Diablo II got such amazing remasters while Warcraft 3 got fucked. That being said, I'm very happy that Warcraft 3: Reforged was not a sign of how D2: Remastered would turn out. In the late 2000's I voraciously consumed everything Blizzard put out, but I missed out on D2 because of my age. As such, it's nice to know that there's a great option for playing it all these years later!

It really makes me feel old, thinking about how much newer all of those games were when I first played them...

I remember having Diablo II a couple of days before the launch (Thank you EB Games!!!) Glorious times!!! But really it didn't hit greatness until LoD expansion launched. That being said this remaster is awesome in my experience other than the online outages with log on issues.... and the lack of ladder. I usually was pretty high up on the ladder ranking system in US East. I did notice a few changes that other people might not have noticed. The loot system has been tweaked a little in what it drops (I may have done a few more than 30 countess runs lol) it's not way different but I feel like the % chances for some items have been scaled back a bit in some cases and in others enhanced. I can't say for certain because RNG be like that.

D2R with a few more minor tweaks for me is a 10 out 10 game. Minor being ladder and fix the log in issues lol

Also please stop rolling back.... I did act III in hell mode 3 times lol

This game is missing a major feature that is apparently present only on PC: Chat/Lobbies. If you play this on console you will miss out on easy trading, speedy matchmaking, coordinated Diablo Clone spawns, and more.

It's a real disappointment how this aspect has been left out as it was a huge part of the multiplayer experience. I'd say get it for PC. Don't bother getting it for console unless you are interested in buying a copy for PC too.

there's a starcraft remaster?? How could I missed that

Gonna buy this soon. Great review!

I didn't play too much of this growing up as I didn't have consistent access to a PC until the later 2000s/early 2010s. By then I forgot this game existed until a Goodwill trip a few years ago. Now that they have a port with proper support for current Gen hardware.. I want to play it!

It’s well-worth it and aged fairly well. The original Diablo was great, but Diablo 2 was, and to many still is, legendary. It’s the grand pappi of games like Path of Exile which only exist because of Blizzard’s insistence on repeatedly botching their biggest IP’s. I’m really happy that they stayed true to the original, to the point that you can switch between old school and remastered graphics with one press of a button. The contrast really shows you how much effort went into refreshing the game for modern hardware, just in case nostalga glasses stand in the way of telling the difference.

I'd reiterate to stay away from console versions unless doing PC in tandem. Diablo forums are amok with complaints for the lack of chat/lobbies. Can't stress it enough.

Yeah the console version has some odd choices, I reviewed on PC so I kinda forgot. I guess it's better than nothing though given the game used to be PC exclusive lol. I dunno if they ever changed it but console also doesn't have proper multiplayer lobbies, you just matchmake into parties.
As long as you actually have friends to play with it's not too bad though, or you play solo. Trades and stuff can and should be facilitated through the discord tbh. It's just a lot more convenient. The in-game chat isn't the best. Not really good for nostalgia but text chatting on console really sucks to begin with.

According to Blizzard drop rates are identical but obviously I have no way of actually confirming that lol.

Lack of ladder is meh. Ladder pretty much needed to exist cuz early Diablo 2 had such rampant duping and exploiting. Now with a clean start it's not really needed, especially with ladder exclusive content no longer existing. They're going to use ladder as streamer bait. Making it shorter and such. I'd be real surprised if many people left general population for more than a single ladder season. Kinda wish they'd do a Path of Exile and have themed ladder events.

Log-in issues stopped for me around day 2. Some pretty minor interruptions but nothing major. Couldn't join a game with Chary for day 1 but got fixed on 2 as well. I assume it's cuz I'm US-West. New World taught me that for whatever reason US-East is like 5x the size of West. But that's a hard problem to solve since it's just an extremely popular game.

There seems to be an unspoken rule that console games must not utilize mouse and keyboard. FFXIV seems to be the exception of this rule. It just feels like wasted potential when it comes to pc ported games. I do see the value that DIscord offers in facilitating trades, even with PC. It's less chance, less time sensitive, and community reinforcing. This does help a little with consoles, but even with consoles you have to go through extra steps of contact adding/accepting before joining a specific game--tacking on a couple minutes to an otherwise seamless process. Trades and matchmaking aren't impossible with console--just hindered. But it is rather impossible to coordinate a Diablo II clone spawn for the end-game charm.

It's just ironic that I would need a PC/smartphone open on Discord to play a console game. Alt+tab is so much better.

Great to see the game being a good remake but the lack of local co-op on consoles kinda killed any excitement i had for the game. D3 had such a good coop mode and the switch is practically built for co-op gaming.

I'm just glad it didn't follow the path of Warcraft III Reforge, which was a failure. I'm not sure how it is now. I'd love to see companies treat old IP with love and respect especially if they want to remake it. It's amazing to see they did justice to this game.
