The KIWI Design Head Strap intends to increase comfort and take pressure off the front of your face by shifting weight from the front of the headset to the back. Does it work? Strap in and let's find out...

The Oculus Quest is a great stand-alone VR headset that enables the full-on virtual reality experience without a desktop PC or any kind of additional hardware. The Quest comes with everything you need to get started, but could the stock experience be improved? Kiwi Design seems to think so with their range of Oculus Quest accessories and they have kindly sent a few of them to us for review.

Let’s take a look at the KIWI Design Oculus Quest Head Strap.

Due to the self-contained hardware, the Oculus Quest is front heavy by design and the default headband doesn’t really do much to alleviate the pressure that many eventually feel pressing against their face. Many users have taken to modifying the headband by including counterweights or going so far as to replace it entirely with alternatives.

Kiwi Design have attempted to address this issue with their Oculus Quest head strap. The strap promises to reduce the pressure felt by shifting the weight to the top of the user's head.

The head strap is made of good quality soft-touch material and is held in place with velcro making installation a pinch. Simply follow the included instructions and fix the strap in place and you’ll be done in about 15 seconds. Though it may take some further readjustment when wearing to ensure the strap fits comfortably and close to your head.

Simply put the headset on as normal and tighten the velcro straps to your desired fit. This will have to be done for each user, as well as the Oculus Quest's existing velcro straps, so if your headset is shared between many people, the extra step for a bit of added comfort may seem like a hurdle too many.

Does the head strap make a difference? Surprisingly, yes! I’m not quite sure how it works but you can feel the difference immediately -- the weight is shifted from your forehead/face and on to the top of your head. It introduces a bit more pressure up top and adds to the number of things attached to your head, so it may take some time to adjust to, but the weight has to go somewhere and personally I’d rather feel it on the top of my head than having the visor pressing against my face and cheek bones.

One issue I did notice with the product is that because the visor portion of the headset is held less securely against your face is that the headstrap introduces a little bit more wobble. Meaning that during more active games the headset shifts from left to right a little more.

However, the strap does its job and does it well. If you're one of those that find the stock experience of the Quest uncomfortable then this might be the answer.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
 • Improves comfort
 • Reduces pressure and red-marks on face
 • Easy to install
What We Didn't Like ...
 • Expensive for a velcro strap
 • Can introduce a little wobble during certain games

Overall

The asking price of $17.99 for what is effectively a strap with a bit of velcro seems a bit excessive but installation is a breeze and the product delivers exactly what it promises. There is an abundance of home-made remedies to improve the comfort of the Oculus Quest but for those that require a quick and proven solution, the Kiwi Design head strap is a solid choice.
I'll come out and say. HTC Deluxe Audio Strap > Most third party additions/accessories.
