Looking for better headphones for your Oculus Quest? KIWI Design have created a pair of earphones specially designed for the Quest. How does that sound? Let's take a look...

The Oculus Quest is a great stand-alone VR headset that enables the full-on virtual reality experience without a desktop PC or any kind of additional hardware. The Quest comes with everything you need to get started, but could the stock experience be improved? Kiwi Design seems to think so with their range of Oculus Quest accessories and they have kindly sent a few of them to us for review.

Let’s take a look at the KIWI Design Oculus Quest Headphones.

Although the Oculus Quest has surprisingly good built-in speakers, they lack any kind of real bass and their open nature restricts the immersiveness of VR. For those longer gaming sessions or for music based rhythm games you’re going to want a good pair of headphones.

Fortunately, the Quest has not one but two 3.5mm headphone jacks to enable you to hook up your own pair. Though doing so will surely end up with you getting wrapped up in an excess of headphone cable given that the sockets are just inches from your ears.

Kiwi Design’s Oculus Quest headphones feature separated earphones with their own individual cable and plug that connect directly to the audio jacks on the side of the headset.

Supplied in a small plain white box, the packaging is plain and modest. The earphones come with three sets of silicone ear tips to accommodate large, medium and small ears.

These are in-ear earphones/buds that completely seal the ear canal when inserted, blocking out almost all outside noise, creating an immersive listening experience and delivering strong bass. The build is high quality with a metal construction and flexible wire with a right-angled jack.

Using the standard medium sized tips, the earphones are comfortable and lightweight. They weigh in at just 4 grams (6-7 grams including the cable). The sound quality from the 10mm neodymium magnet driver is excellent although a little bass heavy and are a massive step up from the built-in speakers. Comparing them to my decade old Sony earphones I was using previously; they sound miles better.

With the headset set to full volume they get loud too - we tested them out in multiple games and felt the volume most comfortable at about 90%. Surround sound isn't hindered at all and the spatial audio sounded great and we could hear every detail in game from all angles.

The only complaint I have is that the cable, at 20cm long, is a little longer than necessary given the close proximity of the earphone jacks to the wearers ears. It feels excessive and leads to a small amount of wobbly cable hanging down, but this is nothing that a simple cable tie can’t fix.

Compared to using your own headphones or earphones, for the asking price of $21.99 these feel like a luxury addition to your Oculus Quest - removing the requirement to deal with excessive amounts of wire and large bulky headphones on top of wearing the headset itself. They are not a necessity but a convenience that makes hopping into and out of VR a more immersive and simplified experience. Fortunately they also sound great and have a high build quality.
