Attempting to recreate the success of the Index's Knuckle controllers, KIWI Design have retrofitted the Oculus Touch controllers with knuckle straps of their own. Do they hold their own?

The Oculus Quest is a great stand-alone VR headset that enables the full-on virtual reality experience without a desktop PC or any kind of additional hardware. The Quest comes with everything you need to get started, but could the stock experience be improved? Kiwi Design seems to think so with their range of Oculus Quest accessories and they have kindly sent a few of them to us for review.

Let’s take a look at the KIWI Design Knuckle Straps.

Immersiveness is the key to a good VR experience, so finding ways to detach yourself from the outside world is only going to heighten your enjoyment when playing.

That’s why when Valve released their Index headset, they introduced their new knuckle controllers that enable you to hold the controllers without having to constantly grip them by having them strapped on to your hands. The idea is that when gripping, picking up or throwing items in the virtual world, being able to physically open and close your grip without dropping the controller would be another step forward in VR.

Although the Oculus Touch controllers (compatible with both the Rift S and Quest) do not have individual finger tracking like the Valve Index, they do have a grip button on the side of the controller that translates to gripping an object in most games. However unlike the Index, you just cannot open your grip entirely or effectively “let go” of the controllers without dropping them.

Kiwi design have taken the idea of the Valve Index knuckle controllers and have adapted and applied it to the Oculus Rift/Quest controllers with their knuckle strap accessory - allowing you to open and close your grip and still having the Oculus Touch controllers be held in place.

Inside the packet you’ll get a pair of knuckle straps. They are made of two parts and are held together by velcro. Following the included instructions; installation is easy - simply remove the original wrist strap that is held in place under the battery cover and replace it with the first bottom half of the knuckle strap. The second part uses a smaller rubber band that can be attached in two different ways.

The first method is to stretch the elastic band over the controller and have it sit just above the bottom Oculus/menu buttons. It holds in place tightly and doesn’t feel cheap or restrict access to any buttons. The second method is to loop the elastic band through the top tracking ring of the controllers and thread it back through itself. Then simply pull the straps over your hand, sitting just above the knuckles and connect them together with velcro to a tightness you’re comfortable with.

The straps feel comfortable and are made of a nice PU leather style material that feels soft to the touch. The wrist strap, though absurdly long, is made of a comfortable soft string material. The rubber bands feel strong and durable and they provide a couple of spares in the package should they break.

Once installed and fitted to your hands, the knuckle straps take some practice to get used to. Being able to release your grip and have the controller “float” in place is a game changer and does feel like the next VR standard. However, I personally could not get my hands to sit in a comfortable position when strapped in place. I found that however I adjusted the strap, I could not get my thumb to rest in a place where I could easily press all the controllers face buttons -- the strap continually fought with my grip and meant I could not reach the buttons as comfortably as I could without the strap in place.

Loosening the strap allowed me to get the position of my hand and thumb right, but meant that the tightness of the strap around my hand was lessened. I wouldn’t feel comfortable relying on it in that position when throwing objects and releasing my grip without relying on the wrist strap alone which is what the Touch controllers already come with.

Maybe my hands are too big or my thumb is too long as I have let others try the controllers with the Kiwi knuckle straps installed and they have not had the same issue as me, so your experience may differ, but these straps certainly do not seem to be one size fits all.

Overall

The Kiwi design knuckle straps are a great idea - and for some they can work great. They’re simple to fit, comfortable and quick to readjust to different hand sizes. They’re affordable too at just $16.99 but be aware that they may not work for everyone!
