More Super Heroes!
I am of the opinion that 2013's Lego Marvel Super Heroes is one of the best Marvel games out there and definitely the best Lego game to date. With that in mind, I had high expectations for TT Games' latest title set in the Marvel universe. Lego Marvel's Avengers takes place not only in Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age of Ultron, but we also get to play through levels from both of the Captain America movies, Thor: The Dark World and Iron Man 3.
Gameplay
Playing through 5 different movies isn't as interesting as it should be and levels and scenes are mixed up incoherently. Gameplay starts with the opening of Age of Ultron, then flips to Assemble, then back to Ultron with smidgens of the other movies thrown in here and there. It doesn't make much sense and if you haven't seen the movies, or only some of them, you'll have no idea what is going on throughout the rather lacklustre story mode. Most of the best scenes from the movies are recreated via cutscenes, with minimal humour instead of being woven into gameplay. Series' standard puzzle mechanics return; smash everything up until you find the bouncing bricks, build an object that allows you to progress, rinse and repeat. This formula is to be expected in a Lego game, it's just a bit of a disappointment that there is no real advancement in gameplay when compared to Lego Marvel Super Heroes or any of the other recent Lego game franchises.
Combat is also almost identical to previous games, but for some reason normal enemies seem to take a lot more damage than usual. This could be to coax the player into using the new chain combos each character now possesses, which can kill an enemy with a single button press, but the animation is always the same and takes around 2-3 seconds to play out making it sometimes more viable to just ignore the enemies, smash up the level and move on.
Still Fun
Despite the stories shortcomings, there is still a lot of fun to be had in Lego Avengers. Once the story is out of the way and the hub worlds are all unlocked, we get to mess around, do side missions, drive vehicles and start unlocking more characters. My 6 year old son loves Manhattan and I can see why. It's a huge level, great for flying around, jumping from the Hellicarrier or discovering hidden secrets. Flying controls have been tightened up and aren't nearly as unpredictable as they have been in previous games, especially when taking on racing challenges.
Playing splitscreen coop with my son in freeroam mode is where the game shines the most for me. He is always a flying character, because of course he is, and I usually use a character with Might so I can kill stuff with ease. He flies around looking for stuff whilst I take on missions and unlock more characters for him to try out. The fact that we can both essentially play the game at the same time, but independently is pretty awesome.
It's weird to have no Fantastic Four, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man or X-Men to play as, especially when they were all in the previous game, and we are in the same city here, but there are over 200 characters to find and unlock which is always exciting even if you have no idea who 70% of them are!
