Review Approach:

16-Bit GTA, where do I sign up?
Retro City is under fire from thugs and crime, you and your 8 pixels should join them!

One small issue to clear up right away: This game is not a run 'n' gun type of game. Doing so will leave you lost, confused, and or dead (in the game world that is). Retro City is a tightly developed game with clear objectives and newly added tutorials to flesh out anything that was missed or left otherwise unexplained in the original shipment of RCR. This is not "Hotline Miami" where most the missions are simply to kill everything that moves. No slander at HM, its a great game and takes lots of patience and skill. RCR is a different animal despite some of the similarities.

If you haven't played this game, it plays like a 16 bit Grand Theft Auto title, but made in the recent years, with all the polish 2012 can muster.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • Colorful and well designed graphically
  • Popping soundtrack made with what sounds like original hardware
  • Instantly recognizable parodies and easter eggs galor
  • Hilarious writing that is almost surreal
  • New tutorials that cover a lot of mechanics I felt were glossed over in the first release of RCR
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Missions can feel samey after a while
  • some of the jokes are very niche feeling, if you don't know the source material, you probably wont get the joke.
8
Gameplay
Fast, fluid, and old school stylez.
9
Presentation
Beautifully rendered 16 bit presentation, mimicking the legendary SNES and Genesis days. The expanded music collection is welcome, because who DOESN'T want more chiptunes.
7
Lasting Appeal
Pretty high. Leaderboards, both RCR and RCR DX modes with leaderboards for both, arcade missions, and free roam mode can keep you entertained for hours.
9.6
out of 10

Overall

This is a kickstarter done right. The devs took the initial money and created a masterpiece. With the sales money, they devs took their life work off of its pedestal, and polished what was already glittering gold into something even better. These updates and tweaks are great and well worth a repurchase.

just to add-on to the wii u comment, he never hit the threshold to make money on the wii. if he released it for the wii u than the wii sales would surely stop. brian provinciano recently discussed this on a twitch playthrough of RCR DX. so that's why it isn't on the wii u as of yet.
