The Deadly Tower
The Deadly Tower of Monsters is the latest title to come from Chilean developer ACE Team. The game is a tongue-in-cheek, 1950's B-movie inspired scifi-themed action adventure. Set up as a DVD re-release of an old movie released on VHS, the game features commentary from the movie's 'Director' as the player makes their way through the story.
Setup
Dick Starspeed is the main character of the game accompanied by 2 other switchable characters, Scarlett and the Robot who each also have their own unique abilities. The aim of the game is to get to the top of the Deadly tower and free the enslaved apes of Gravoria from the Emperor who resides at the top. Players have a variety of upgradable ranged and melee weapons to find and equip as they battle their way through hordes of stop and claymation enemies. There are dinosaurs, apes, bugs, robots and huge bosses like a King Kong type gorilla and a metal chameleon doing their best to stop you from progressing up the tower.
Weird
I get what ACE Team were trying to accomplish here, the B-movie style idea is sound but it has limited appeal and a lot of what is in the game feels strange. For instance the tower is really high with checkpoints all the way up it allowing you to jump off and soar down to other parts of the map, but as you initially came from the base of it, what is the point? Sure you may find a previously inaccessible rare golden cog allowing you to upgrade a weapon, but you don't need them as enemies and even bosses are generally a pushover. Abilities are needed to progress a handful of times but are pretty useless against enemies, shooting sections where you can aim down the tower are interesting but the camera and controls aren't refined enough to make it enjoyable and the damn narrator just doesn't shut up. He is intentionally droll, but the jokes aren't very funny and his voice doesn't stop for the entire game and by the end I was glad it was over.
