That's the point. The 3DS is the first system that such self-replication would be possible on. The 3DS has StreetPass, and if this feature also installs system updates, then a virus would be a cinch to spread.

This is all speculation, though. When the 3DS comes out, we'll find out exactly what StreetPass does and does not do.
As far as I'm aware, StreetPass is not meant for installing system updates but for interacting with other people as you pass by them. It is not yet known whether or not system updates are installed automatically without user input. IMO, that would not be a smart move by Nintendo anyway unless it requires the 3DS to be plugged into a power source. But that's a different topic altogether.

the way my logic is possessing is that hacking the the 3DS gives armature programmers (or other) the freedom to express their creativity through homebrew (in 3D) or feel that gaming should be free and meet the challenge to combat anti-piracy. that's why i assume hackers are going to hack the 3DS.

@tehskull
we aren't talking about viruses. that's the other thread

*FIX*
That's a pretty naive assumption then. You only have to look at the PS3 to know that that's not entirely true. How many years did it take to jailbreak the PS3? What, 4 years? And even still, it's very premature and not even worth it for most people. Sure, someone could hack it. Heck, they probably will but I bet if it does, it's going to be much more cumbersome than what we have today. Given this uncertainty, why bother worrying about viruses right now?

This thread shouldnt have been born. anyone who would bother making a virus for a game system is a total dumb ass.

How does that make this thread not worthy of being born? It has happened before (Or were you too little to remember the great DS bricking scare of 2006. Intentional release of a file that could corrupt original DS firmwares was leaked and many people added them to 'homebrew' in an attempt to break many people's DSs) and is a valid worry about the future though an unlikely one.

The ds has viruses (flashme clones)
The wii has viruses (malicious wads)
The dsi isn't hacked yet, but you can say that the dsi xl has a virus with nesds on a dstwo
The 3ds will also get one
Those aren't viruses. Viruses self-replicate and spread themselves.
Then only pc has viruses yet, but in my opinion a Virus is something that is spread (can also be done by the producers of the Virus and in this case it is just that they spread it via wifi) that brakes the hardware, which is done in all cases

everything that uses some sort of software that is possible to get connected to an external drive is possible to be infected with a virus.

there are different versions of viruses and you can even infect new TV's with viruses nowadays ...

What Youkai was probably referring to is that modern TVs often have a version of linux or some other operating system with a fair amount of features and grunt running in the background- http://hackaday.com/2009/10/18/samsung-tv-firmware-hacking/

Being able to run code on top of this means you can get malware (not sure how much there might be for the given architectures but it is well within the realms of possibility).

Oh stfu. i remember all that. The person had to be a dumbshit too. You have to be stupid to let stuff like that happen. Its just like getting a PC virus. Only dumb asses get them, trying to watch too much porn.

What a virus is and what a virus isn't is not up to opinion.

It's totally possible.

Will it happen? Probably not. But if enough people buy one (a lot of people) it may be a big enough target.
