It sounds like you forgot to do step 2, which would make it a ridiculous tutorial. Unfortunately, there is no fix, but there is a workaround:
1. Power off your 3DS console and ensure that the battery is drained
2. Apply pressure to the bottom 3DS screen for roughly 15 seconds (don't go too long, or you will mess things up in the future)
3. Download Windows 10 (home edition only) from a reliable source
4. Extract the source code using Windows Paint
5. Apply all Windows 10 firmware changes to your 3DS by soldering on an SSD to it (256gb or higher)
6. Make sure the SSD is formatted to exFat.
7. Plug in a 3DS charger fan adapter and move the fan counter-clockwise to generate charge.
8. When Windows 10 boots up, select C:/Documents and Settings/3DS/CFW/Version/Latest/Patch/2.0.0/Version.bmp
9. Convert it to .jpg
10. Download 3DS version data from *that* ISO site
11. Run the .exe (rename the .iso to .exe!)
12. Follow the on-screen instructions
13. Minecraft: Story Mode for 3DS should now be installed.
14. In mc: story mode, go to settings > 3DS > Version and your version number will be displayed!
Sorry that you have to use the workaround, but you should have been more careful

I feel like this is directed at me. I never needed help finding my firmware but I was an extreme idiot when first hacking my 3DS.
