I recently bought this Action Replay DS, it worked fine connecting to a PC until I updated it to firmware 1.71, the code manager no longer detects it and it does load when inserted. I cannot manually create a code because it says "please insert action replay" Tried a reset and it didn't help. Mouse icon doesn't appear either.

Run lsusb in a Linux system (or have a look at Device Manager in Windows) to see if any USB device at all is detected when connecting the Action Replay.

Maybe ask Datel support.

I have looked at device manager, it does appear and the drivers were installed by me.

This isn’t a great answer probably…but maybe it will help you figure out the issue

Have you tried loading a VM with an older version of windows? I believe their application is super duper picky. Even back when these action replays where released(and actively sold) I had similar issues to what you’re describing

Half the time the program didn’t detect my card or was able to load any cheats. But once I was able to learn more and restore windows myself(I was much younger) that seemed to fix it

I only have my action replay DSi still(but no cable) or I’d try some things to help you find a better solution

I'm using it on an age appropriate Dell Inspiron running windows XP 32 bit.

I really wouldn’t say that’s age appropriate ha

Try windows vista or 7
XP is very suitable for this. In fact it is THE operating system I would recommend using for this task.
The readme.txt on the mini CD that came with Action Replay DS explicitly mentions XP.

Datel did support Vista with some update, but I doubt Windows 7 or even newer will work.
====

Try downloading a newer version of the Code Manager and/or try the one on the CD as well. Maybe the firmware isn't flashed correctly.
Other than that I can only repeat: Ask Datel support for help.

No problem. Maybe you aren't really wrong after all because of this part:
I only have my action replay DSi still(but no cable)
Action Replay DSi obviously came out later and maybe is Windows 7 compatible (should still support XP though).

The Codejunkies website doesn't look anymore like I remember. No idea if there are still downloads for the old products. What I do remember is that Action Replay DS had the last firmware version with the mentioned 1.71 which is running perfectly on mine. The DSi version had another (probably lower number) firmware revision.

If you are wondering, it's the original AR DS not the DSi. I know it's the newest version of the firmware and pretty sure it's the newest version of the program. I will ask support however

@NDCADD87 Thanks for bumping the topic! I missed the last message and the photos above.

I hope you have the exact same problem… maybe it can be solved now easily:
AR.jpg

AR Code Manager will not be able to access Action Replay DS content by simply connecting the device to the PC. This works only while the DS (Lite) has started the AR software. On the DS there will be a note about the PC connection as well.
It says "Waiting for DS" not only "Waiting for the naked AR"

You are welcome. So everything was working one day before I commented on this post. I updated my AR to 1.71 and then the yellow mouse disappeared from my AR. it used to be where I marked the photo. It was there until i updated it to 1.71.

This red [START] should appear only after inserting a game instead of the AR itself.

Would have been too easy. Seems I'm unable to help and something in the firmware is borked. The mouse icon appears on mine with v1.71 and it connects fine under Windows XP.
Side note: A little surprising they are still keeping the codes online (which I couldn't see as the XP machine is offline). My guess would have been that the servers were long dead (as it is the case with the PS2 AR)

Yea it looks like i bricked mine from adding more games. The good thing is the pokemon games I play are already on the ARDS.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
