Hello gbatemp folks.

I've been looking into different file browser homebrews for the Nintendo Switch to extract RARs, let alone ZIPs. The closest thing I have found is NX Shell but I get an error when extracting. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. :)

Your only hope is that somebody ports 7-Zip to the Switch.

And compressed files come in so many different formats, even within the same containers. Rarely, I'll even come across RARs that 7-Zip can't open, but WinRAR can.

What's in these RARs, anyway? If they're Switch games, you're almost certainly better off just sticking with NSZ files, as they save lots of space and many title managers are able to support them now.

Anything else, you're probably better off using your computer to do the extraction. All depends on what you're trying to do, if you're running an FTP server on the Switch I'm sure you can come up with a short script for your PC that will download a RAR file, extract it, and then FTP the contents over to the Switch.

Heck, you could write a PHP page that you can interact with using nXDownload, the page could take a URL parameter and return the contents it downloaded and extracted. Probably a bit overkill but definitely doable.

Maybe your error is related to your SD format type? Fat32 only supports files 4gb or less

Larger will need exFat

Thanks, NSZ are games split into different parts right? So an installer like Tinfoil could recognize them and combine them together?

Also, I want to be able to extract the .RARs and .ZIPs on the switch directly cause my OS doesn't really provide a viable solution to open them. On my Chromebook, I can usually open RARs but since the one in question (3.5 GB) is so large, I get an error when I try to open it with the built-in extractor.

Oh also NSZ files are practically no where on the internet so it doesn't seem very viable
thats more of the fact that the file format only came out october last year and has only started to be streamlined in the recent months

compare that to 3 years of releases

Thanks. Soooo then back on topic, can I extract the RAR on the Switch console itself using some sort of existing homebrew?

I don't think so.

Though I don't know why you need that, just get your files on a PC, optionally compress them to NSZ, and move them to your Switch.

There are libraries for compressing/extracting archives and I'm pretty sure there are some switch ports of libraries like that

Ugh, well, if ONLY I had access to a PC.. I have a Mac and Chromebook

Well, one option would be to get a cloud PC/VPS for like 8€ a month and just use it to download & compress Switch games. Those servers usually have a gigabit connection too. That's what I often do (tho I also have 300mbit/s at home so yeah)

mid you can tell me a viable use case for this, I will add it. If you are trying to extract rar’d nsp files I will just laugh.

Did you tried DBI? It has 2 different ways to extract files: Extract all files in archive context menu and copy/paste from inside archive. One of them support big files.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."
