It (unfortunately) seems like Beyond the Labyrinth, one of the most stunning 3DS games we have seen so far, might not even make it to America. It has been talked about as slow paced, taking dungeon crawling back to it's roots, in a bad way.

And, sure enough, Beyond the Labyrinth is incredibly slow-paced. The first-person RPG has had a modest resurgence in Japan in the wake of Etrian Odyssey's success, but Labyrinth feels decidedly old-school compared to the Etrian's series relatively snappy pace. Your party moves at a sluggish pace, with each step from one grid space to the next taking several seconds to complete. On the plus side, you can move at diagonal angles, but that's just as pokey.

Combat plays out in real-time, without a transition to a separate battle screen. The enemies in the TGS demo are simple and stupid and pose little threat, but one assumes that they quickly ramp up in ferocity and intelligence as the game progresses. You can move to evade foes, and the battle system is unconventional (which is where the tri-Ace influence comes into play).

It's unfortunate, because otherwise Beyond the Labyrinth would probably appeal to hardcore American RPG fans. Its deliberate pace and sumptuous graphics are very much in line with the tastes of old-fashioned CRPG addicts. It's hard to imagine grizzled grognards taking much satisfaction in wandering through a hostile dungeon with a little girl tagging along beside them -- or wanting to spend much time gaming on a 3DS for that matter.[/p]

I don't mind slow paced dungeon crawlers, but the rest of America/Europe might. I really do hope this gets localized.

Personally I liked Etrian Odyssey, so this may be good. Besides, Old School American/European RPG gamers might like it as it slightly caters to those who like dungeon crawlers, just with a Turn-based twist.

It's probably hard to imagine because the author wasn't *alive* when we were tromping around those dungeons--even us 3DS owners who played *ALL* of those dungeon crawlers 'back in the day'.

um, the OP said battle was in real-time, with no transition from exploration to combat, which means it's a real-time first-person dungeon crawler, so it's definitely not turn-based. also, that definitely conflicts with OP saying this is slow-paced, as real-time can potentially mean hectic or active (with turn bars charging up or something like that). i don't really see how real-time can be slow-paced, unless turns come up too slow or battles drag on.

with all those descriptions in mind, i'm starting to see this title as something akin to Hexen and Fighting Fantasy DS, but with grid-based movements. i hope combat is fun and engaging, like what Tri-Ace did with Valkyrie Profiles (but not necessarily like that). i imagine this will also have combo features, like chaining attacks or whatnots.

I don't care what magazine reviewers think about a games, I always make my own decision.

They think it's bad/slow-paced/not hardcore .... who care about hardcore, I care about fun and visual for that game!

Etrian Odyssey ? Such a disappointment... especially that monsters only appeared when you stepped into location (you couldn't see them from distance) and then you were forced to fight them. Turn-based combat is also what completely destroyed the Eye of Beholder port for GBA for me.

This is how it should play:

lol, what? why were you disappointed? did they proclaim the game as anything but turn-based? or did you expect otherwise? XD

sounds like you were expecting stuff that it's definitely not, like expecting gravity to go up instead of down. i'm afraid you disappointed yourself with your impossible expectations, not the games you mentioned.

I was disappointed because I wanted a decent dungeon crawler game a'la Black Crypt, Dungeon Master, Eye of Beholder - without stupid turn-based combat or other Japanese crap. There's no such game for GBA nor for DS, that's why I'm disappointed. Now it turns out Beyond the Labyrinth will follow the same route.

If you just want pi for emulation no point when Anbernic releases new shit every two seconds

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
What's really cool about Pi's tho is you can have multiple SD cards with different OS on each SD card and change from say a gaming machine to a full fledged pc if wanted
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Plus all bios are set up and usually includes at least 128gbs or 64
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Yeah but if your main goal is just to play n64 and GameCube you can save about $50 and have the portability option

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
True, but on 2 monitors at 4k. Its just want you want really, to each they own.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
For a kids aspect Anbernic would be the better option they'd probably melt over the price on a good 4k display

For that texasroo guy, I'd recommend the Spell and speak as his first system.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
So they buy a pi5 kit for about $150 and say a 28" 4k display probably looking around $400 total
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They'll be getting in the territory of portable Pcs anyway

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again you get what you pay for, its like buying a S series for $300 but its only 1440p native, if you want true 4k, gotta get the X model for $500. But yea you right, when moms buying it anyways, you gotta stay cheap.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They could use HD out on their TV no real need for a monitor these days tbh the purists will disagree
