I don't think anyone has been banned on the Wii U for anything other than cheating while playing online.

Nobody has been banned for playing pirated games on the Wii U.

You're unlikely to brick your Wii U, but it's a good idea to make a NAND backup just in case. If something goes seriously wrong, you can restore the backup using a hardmod.
