Castlevaina: Symphony of the Night Decompilation Project in the Works

Turns out there is a Castlevania SOTN Decompiliation project out there. The project aims to Decompile the PS1 version of the game.

Quote from the Developer Xeeynamo's Github page..​

A work-in-progress decompilation of Castlevania Symphony of the Night for PlayStation 1. It aims to recreate the source code from the existing binaries using static and/or dynamic analysis. The code compiles byte-for-byte to the same binaries of the game, effectively being a matching decompilation. Currently it only supports the US version of the game SLUS-00067.​

How cool is that! SOTN is my favorite Castlevania game, hopefully once the project is complete they'll add the Saturn only levels in, though that's probably only the tip of what they could add ​

Why don't the people reversing this just ask the game devs for the source code? It's an ancient game not being sold anymore officially.

Have we seen any PS1 games be decompiled like this* before? I could well have missed one but I can't recall seeing any yet. Would be interested to see how it compares to the N64 and suitable vintage X86.

*The Diablo decompilation involved the PS1 version but it was via a slightly different method/data bonus than the non gigaleak N64 stuff.

Japanese companies more than most hold things tight, and it is also actively being sold (not to mention the time horizons for something to be as commercially worthless as say most Atari games are today hence them being freeware/officially turning blind eye are rather longer for a game like this).

Uh...you're kinda wrong this time 'round, chief. It's still sold on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita and PS4 (And I guess it's available on mobile phones too)

Actually, I think hacking Dawn Of Sorrow would be a better (And easier) way to do it. But we still need to convert the assets to DS quality

I have fond memories of SOTN, and really enjoyed playing as Richter with his speed and fighting game like controls.
