Clamshell handheld gaming PCs AYANEO FLIP KB & DS begin crowdfunding campaign

ayaneo flip.jpg

AYANEO has launched the crowdfunding campaigns of two devices within the REMAKE line, the AYANEO FLIP KB and AYANEO FLIP DS. As usual with crowdfunding campaigns, caution is advised but AYANEO has a strong track record when it comes to such campaigns and the FLIP models have already exceeded their crowdfunding goals at the time of writing.

Both models bear a clamshell design, with the FLIP DS bearing two screens and the FLIP KB sporting a physical keyboard. Early bird price for the AYANEO FLIP KB start at $699 and $739 for the AMD 7840U-powered and 8840U-powered models, respectively. Early bird pricing for the AYANEO FLIP DS start at $739 and $779 for the 7840U-powered and 8840U-powered models, respectively.

Maybe if they didnt waste money putting out a new model of ewaste every 4 months they wouldn’t need to crowd fund

after a couple of crowdfunds they shouldnt need to do it like this anymore. i wish ayaneo would be a real company and get out of their congame. if this was there first product i wouldnt call it a congame but crowdfunding this late into their business is just distasteful and tacky
I will say for this concept in particular, it's hard to gauge how much demand there will be. They're relying on nostalgia pretty heavily since the clamshell design necessitates it being a lot less powerful than other portable PCs, including other Ayaneo products.

Been thinking about getting one of these portable gaming pc devices for a while now. I’ve noticed ayaneo constantly has new devices. Im curious if there are known issues with reliability. Or if I could buy one and feel confident it will likely last atleast a few years.

And I’m assuming like most people that the black model is the more appealing version.

Well, at a glance, more people seem to be picking up the DS version. If I was getting one, I would also go for the DS one, even if I would want a bigger 2nd screen.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the DS one! Being able to navigate the web while playing would be pretty cool.

Can anyone share experiences with Ayaneo products? How are the controls? Buttons? Joysticks?

I've not been much of a PC player in the past other than emulation. Can you stream Steam from a PC to this thing? I have a pretty beefy laptop that can probably do more.

Thanks in advance!

Great controls, bad battery is the gist. Before you do pull the trigger, just make sure the bottom screen’s resolution will be fine for what you want it for. It could limit its uses.

Still, looks like a great device if you do decide to go ahead!

Bad battery? How bad? That may be enough.

Thanks for the info!

Still think this looks really cool but judging by AYANEO's track record they'll just dump this out and then never provide support for it and announce a new console like a month later. IDK what it is with them. Are people just straight up buying every handheld from them? What's the point of shitting out nearly a hundred SKUs in like 3 years??

Would really be cool if the Flip DS had button mapping to the touch screen like the original original Steam Controller circa 2014:
steamcontroller-640x542.png

It'd be awesome to put little glyphs on touch screen regions and make it do stuff in-game. Obviously they'd never do something so complex but I could see an ambitious programmer making something similar.
I remember there being a touchscreen PC remote/controller app for iOS back in ~2012 that you could import your own photos to make a really neat UI and I was obsessed with photoshopping control schemes for whatever PC games I played at the time. I wish I could remember the name of the app but I get the feeling that it was some random software from Cydia that's lost to time. Would love to see something like this just for the gimmick alone, it'd be a mockup artist's wet dream

EDIT: It was WIFIPAD!!!

Nintendo suing Ayaneo for the clamshell design in 3,2,1...
They don't own the clamshell design. There are aspects of it they do own though, so there are plenty of patents other manufacturers need to sidestep.
For example, the dual locking position hinge is something Nintendo owns the parent for. They obviously have the parent for the original D-Pad design (famously created by Gunpei Yokoi) but manufacturers have already figured out how to sidestep that patent decades ago.

Generally I’d expect a few hours of play time away from a plug. It’s possible things are slightly improved here, so could be worth checking out videos on YT when they come out, but I wouldn’t expect much more than that.

Doesn't seem like it would be much worse than a gaming laptop.
