You don't truly love death note unless you find yourself sitting like L the majority of the time (Near's one-legged rip-off pose thingy doesn't count...)
And unless it was in the anime, i don't remember there being a 40 second rule

The series is excellent, I thoroughly recommend you give it a go. I personally think they do a really good job making the manga even more exciting, not to mention it's one of the most beautifully animated/coloured Anime I've ever seen. IMO the animation quality is on par with Anime OVAs or Movies.
