SMS works fine for sending pictures and texts. If I need to send a video, uncompressed photo, or file, URLs send fine over SMS too.
Everyone who has a phone number has SMS, so I don't have to sell my soul to the Zuck or walk my parents through a setup.
Way back when carriers charged for SMS/MMS, I'd do basically anything to avoid it though. I was even going so far as to remote desktop to my PC to use other messengers (that weren't supported on phones yet) over mobile data.
