I feel like an outsider mentioning these

Civilization
Heroes of Might and Magic
Steel Panthers
Close Combat

Maybe because people still play current versions that are Windows evolutions it's forgotten they began as dos games.

I could mention a string of wargames you've never heard of, but, well, you've never heard of them

There was an old chess game with game pieces that were actually animated and destroyed each other that I played looong ago on some kind of a computer. Forgot what it's called though, it was really good. I'm assuming it's a dos game since it was back in 1996.

Descent 2 - I spent so much time playing that game... amazing classic.
Whiplash - Crazy racing game, I remember having fun destroying the other cars
Jazz Jackrabbit, even though I never played the full game, only the shareware version lol
Bunch of LucasArts adventure games.

And a bunch of other games that came with my 3Dfx Voodoo card. Best bundle ever! (Descent 2 and MechWarrior 2 in the same package FTW)

not sure if any1 said this yet, but the most memorably games for the PC were the X-wing and Tie Fighter games. Back then the best flying game i played till that point was Red Baron.

Duke Nukem 3D (look in the 3D Realms Board for a windows port)
Syndicate (bullfrog)
Hexen (look for win ports like Zdoom)

Although not a DOS game (it's a win16 game), I really liked Fury3 and it's Dos prelude Terminal Velocity.
