DraStic DS Emulator on Android is now free to download, will be taken down soon

Exophase, the developer of the DraStic Nintendo DS emulator, has made a statement regarding the future of the emulator. DraStic has been a popular closed-source DS emulator on Android that has been available for many years. However, following the fallout from both Yuzu and Citra emulator's situations, Exophase has decided to take DraStic off of the Google Play Store. According to them, DraStic was already going to be pulled from the Google Play Store, regardless of current events, but that things made the issue, "more urgent".

Before the app gets delisted, Exophase has made DraStic free to download, when it had previously cost $4.99 to buy. They plan on eventually releasing the source code for the emulator as well. You can grab DraStic DS Emulator from the Google Play Store here.

I've been using the "cracked" version for years now. But it'll be nice to have the latest version for free!

You never pay for software :teach:
From my experiences back in 2016-2017, I will admit that I never bought DraStic in my life so I went with the "pirated" method but the drawback of the "pre-cracked" .apk version is that accessing the settings menu crashes the app. The only way to fix this issue is by patching a clean DraStic .apk using LuckyPatcher (which requires root) to 100% bypass the DRM. Nowadays, this method is obsolete which I will mention later.
Doubt drastic was receiving any updates lately? He's just being weak and using this as excuse to drop development.
Uhhh does this means the proyect, won't have future updates any longer?
DraStic's latest major update (in my opinion) was from late 2019 aka. AArch64 and x64_64 support, the later updates onwards are related to compatibility fixes to Android 11+, tweaks, and minor fixes for specific games; DraStic still receives updates.

And for the main topic in question and to the unfortunate users here who've bought DraStic just weeks / days before it went for free in the Play Store.

The funny thing is that, unless you intended to support the DraStic team by purchasing DraStic or just bought DraStic because of their strict DRM (as I mentioned earlier where the pre-cracked .apk version broke some stuff), the app's DRM has been entirely removed during 2020 via r2.5.2.2, the devs officially confirmed the DRM removal during 2022 when the app was shortly delisted from the Play Store.

I assumed that the DraStic devs have been planning to make the app for free in the future for their "DraStic going open-source" plan that they announced back in 2019, and the current yuzu situation made them remember that plan (or maybe not and did it as an excuse.)

A small reminder that if it would be about emulation alone, Nintendo would be smeared on the walls just like Sony and Atlus previously tried to take down emulators because "muh emulating is piracy", they both LOST in court, Nintendo would as well.
However in Yuzu case it's more complicated than that. First of all the Patreon but by itself that's not against the law. Secondly the early access to better version of Yuzu, again nothing bad so far. I would argue that even if early access version could launch the "just released" game it would still be a case that can be won because it's still JUST emulation. Unfortunately from what I have gathered - altough don't hold me on this as it's information gathered from the Internet and we know how it can be with it - devs had discord channel - ugh - probably with Switch roms on it, if that is true then Nintendo had a "Free for all" at this moment.

OK but what if they didn't have any roms? Would be good and Nintendo shouldn't win, right? Here comes the worst part, what I CAN CONFIRM personally as I have checked the source, the emulator had certain hashes written in the files, very certain hashes... The kind of hashes you use the same way as the example emulator would use BIOS dump file. That was also a "Free for all" for Nintendo, there was no need for "completely unrelated envelope with money in judge's pocket", they had legal grounds for it unfortunately.

As for DraStic well, if it would go open source, maybe work on running it on Raspberry Pi could be resumed someday. Not to mention of course porting it to whatever device of power above "1 kg of potatoes" to run it.

Lucky Patcher actually works without root, though it it better with it.

I have two usable Androids, an older 4.4 Kitkat that is TWRP rooted, and a newer one running Android 10 that is not rooted because it is risky for that particular model.
Yeah, I forgot to mention that LuckyPatcher also works non-root for Drastic but in my experience, it had the same "accessing settings menu crashes the app" issue similar to the pre-cracked .apk versions.

See, folks? This what i was talking about, every piece of homebrew/emulator/cfw etc projects will now follow suit.. Big N won! you'll be at their mercy and be happy.
exploits, custom firmwares, and emulators will always exist. and developers will always exist to keep it alive.

where there's a will there's a way, especially in a world with online anonymity.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
  • DinohScene @ DinohScene:
    run h2testw on it

when SD cards/microSD write speeds drop below a meg a sec, they're usually on the verge of dying

@The Real Jdbye, I considered that, but i'll have to wait until i can get the eu version in the mail lol
