I use Steam anytime I want to use my PS4, or Switch pro controller with a Windows game. It always works without any trouble, and it allows me to remap, or customize it anyway I want. Am I missing out on something by not using this?

It's just one example but it allows you to gain full motion control back in emulators like Dolphin if you play wii games.

Like @Sasori mentioned, things like Gyro controls in emulated Wii U games would need it. Get yourself Breath of the Wild with mods, play it at a higher resolution and frame rate than on consoles.
